Reading FC boss on Savage showdown at Peterborough United

The Royals head into the televised tie seeking an immediate response to their midweek defeat, with Richardson insisting the competition remains an important target for the club.

"We're a club with a good tradition within the Cup as well, so it's something we're really looking forward to," Richardson said.

While the FA Cup offers a break from League One action, Richardson admits his players are eager to get back on the pitch after suffering a setback in midweek.

"The biggest thing is to get three points and the next best thing is to go into a Cup competition, especially after a negative result. You want to get on the next game."

Richardson's first game in-charge of the Royals was the FA Cup first round tie with Carlisle United at the Select Car Leasing Stadium last year. After an impressive start and a 2-0 lead, the Royals capitulated to a 3-2 defeat in additional extra time.

His record in the FA Cup with Reading is something he is looking to rectify.

A major talking point heading into the clash is the prospect of Charlie Savage lining up against father Robbie, who now manages Peterborough.

Richardson strongly hinted the midfielder will be involved and believes it will be a special occasion for both father and son.

"It'll be a great day for them both," Richardson said. "His dad's obviously the opposing manager, playing against his son in a professional environment. I'm sure 23 years ago Robbie didn't imagine he'd one day be managing against his son."

Savage has had fewer opportunities this season after being a key figure under Richardson last term, but the Reading boss stressed the Wales international remains an important part of his plans.

"Charlie deserves to play. He's been training excellently well and he's been chomping at the bit for some time.

"He's been involved in every squad and remains a massive part of what we do."

Reading will travel without long-term absentees George Earthy and Benn Ward, with Richardson confirming it is still too early for either player to return to first-team contention.

There was better news regarding striker Jack Marriott, however, after he came through his latest appearance unscathed as he continues his comeback from injury.

"It's another tick for Jack on his Reading career really," Richardson said. "It's great to have him back on the grass and fingers crossed we can keep him fit for the rest of the year now."

With a busy run of fixtures ahead, Richardson also highlighted the value of progressing in knockout competitions, which could provide valuable minutes for players on the fringes of the first-team picture.

"When you've got a fully fit squad, it gives everybody a chance to play, to keep fit and keep sharp," he said.

"When called upon, they can then go into the league and set the standards from there."

The Royals boss also backed captain Lewis Wing to rediscover the scoring touch that produced 11 goals and 11 assists last season, despite yet to find the net this term.

"I have no hesitation that come the end of the season Lewis Wing will have over double goal involvements," Richardson said.

"His overall performances have been at a really high standard. The goals will come."

With a place in the second round at stake and the added intrigue of the Savage family subplot, Reading will be hoping the younger Savage can leave London Road with the bragging rights.

"Hopefully the younger Savage can get the bragging rights and the victory tomorrow," Richardson added.
