The seven biggest records broken during England and Sri Lanka’s runfest in Rawalpindi

The cricket world stood in near disbelief and awe as Sri Lanka pulled off a staggering two-wicket victory over England in Rawalpindi, hunting down a mammoth target of 430 in a modern-day ODI masterpiece.

Even a transcendent, historic innings from England skipper Harry Brook could not stop the subcontinent side from securing the second-highest successful run chase in One-Day International history.

By the time the final run was ticked off, the scoreboards at the stadium were completely rewritten, with an array of all-time international landmarks shattered in a single day.

Here is a breakdown of the records and landmarks achieved during this monumental 859-run shootout.

1. First ever double century in a losing cause

Before this match, cross-referencing cricket history showed that scoring a double century in a 50-over match was a bulletproof guarantee of victory. Unbelievably, Harry Brook’s sensational 202 became the first double hundred in ODI history to come in a losing cause.

The previous record for the highest individual score in a losing effort belonged to Zimbabwe’s Charles Coventry, who hit an unbeaten 194 against Bangladesh back in 2009.

2. The fastest ODI double ton in cricket history

Brook did not just cross the 200-run threshold; he sprinted past it with relentless fury. The England captain completed his double century in a mind-blowing 114 balls, officially making it the fastest double ton in ODI cricket.

In doing so, he snatched the world record away from India‘s Shubman Gill, who had blasted a double century off 117 deliveries just a month prior against the West Indies.

3. The highest ODI score ever by a non-opener

Almost all double centuries in the format have been generated by opening batsmen who had the benefit of the full 50 overs. Brook became just the second non-opener to score an ODI cricket double ton, joining Glenn Maxwell.

Entering the fray at number four, Brook’s 202 is now the highest individual score by a non-opener in men’s ODIs, eclipsing Maxwell’s iconic 201* from the 2023 World Cup.

Brook’s effort was also the highest ever score by an England batsman – he comfortably beat the previous mark of 182 held by Ben Stokes.

4. New high-water mark on Pakistani soil

Before the match began, the highest ODI total ever recorded in Pakistan was a modest 375/3, set by the hosts against Zimbabwe in 2015. England completely shattered that benchmark by piling on 429/4, representing the first 400-plus ODI total in Pakistan.

Showing just how flat the track was, Sri Lanka eclipsed it hours later by finishing at 430/8 to seal the win.

5. Joe Root enters the 8,000-run club

Lost amidst the flying white balls was a major career milestone for England’s batting anchor. During his supportive knock of 69, Joe Root became the first England batter to surpass 8,000 runs in men’s ODIs.

He is the 34th player in cricket history to cross the threshold, pulling comfortably clear of Eoin Morgan (6,957 runs) on England’s all-time list.

6. A blitzkrieg in the final 25 overs

When the 25-over mark arrived, Sri Lanka looked dead and buried, needing an impossible 261 runs to win. What followed was madness. Led by Pavan Rathnayake’s spectacular 130, Sri Lanka successfully scored those 261 runs in the last 25 overs.

This is by far the most runs a team has successfully chased in the final 25 overs of an ODI, comfortably beating Ireland’s famous chase of 215 against England in 2011.

7. Shared subcontinent half-century dominance

The batsmen held complete dominion over the bowlers, resulting in an incredible eight different batters registering a fifty-plus score during the game. This incredible output equals the world record for the most individual fifty-plus scores in a single ODI match.

The success of the batmen meant pain for the bowlers – Sam Curran broke his own record for the most expensive spell ever by an England bowler as he went for 103 runs in the game.
