Bryson DeChambeau reflects on being 'humbled' by Rory McIlroy after Masters fallout
Bryson DeChambeau shakes hands with Rory McIlroy

Bryson DeChambeau says his Masters humbling at the hands of Rory McIlroy was necessary for him to become "a better person."

DeChambeau and McIlroy were paired in the last group for the final round of the 2025 Masters, and it was billed as a tantalizing head-to-head battle for the green jacket. But the American capitulated at Augusta National while McIlroy clung on and defeated Justin Rose in a playoff to complete the career Grand Slam.

DeChambeau believes golf serves up slices of humble pie more than any other sport, and that enduring miserable days is essential to becoming a better player and person.

"If there's one thing that people don't realize about me, I think this is something that's a good little point, too. It's not that I like being humbled. I like having the perspective, right?" DeChambeau told 'Figuring Out.'

"Like, it sucks getting humbled. Right. Everybody doesn't like it, but it needs to happen. In order for me to improve in life, I need to be humbled.

"There's no question. And you know, whether it's me losing the Masters to Rory or him losing to me at the U.S. Open when I won, it's so good for us. I think that's why golf is so great because it does humble us.

"No matter what, you can think you're the best in the world, and the next day you can't go ahead and hit a golf shot. I think that's what's so beautiful about it.

"That difficult moment is what honestly has helped shape me into a better person today. So if I didn't have that, I wouldn't be the person I am today."

McIlroy and DeChambeau share a bitter rivalry. The two-time major winner got the better of McIlroy at the 2024 U.S. Open, when the Northern Irishman crumbled under the pressure at Pinehurst No. 2.

McIlroy would get his revenge 10 months later at Augusta, where he gave DeChambeau the cold shoulder and did not speak to him throughout the round, something the LIV Golf star vented about after the conclusion of the tournament.

Tensions were raised by McIlroy, who condemned DeChambeau's behavior at The Open Championship this year when the 33-year-old theatrically protested a two-shot penalty for improving his lie, forcing a delay in the release of tee times for the next day. McIlroy described DeChambeau's behavior as "performative" and said he is "not particularly fond of him."

Four months on, DeChambeau has yet to respond to McIlroy's digs. The world No. 37 has kept a low profile since the end of the LIV Golf season until his podcast interview was released on Saturday.

In the interview, DeChambeau also pledged his future to LIV Golf as the league vies to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy and rebuild. He said LIV 2.0 is "going to be done right," and he hopes it "exists forever."
