‘Chargers Are Holding Players Hostage’ — NFL Fans in Disbelief as Report Claims LAC Has No Intention of Entertaining Khalil Mack Trade Offers

Khalil Mack may no longer be the elite player he was earlier in his career, but he remains a formidable presence on the defensive side of the ball. However, his current situation with the Los Angeles Chargers has raised some eyebrows, given the franchise’s disappointing 0-6 record this season.

No team has ever climbed out of such a deep hole to reach the playoffs, putting Los Angeles’ postseason hopes firmly against the odds. Under these circumstances, the idea of exploring trade opportunities for veteran players like Mack would usually make sense as the franchise looks toward its future.

However, the Chargers have shown little interest in shopping Mack, with fans now questioning the wisdom behind that stance.

Chargers Face Backlash Over Khalil Mack Trade Stance

On October 10, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported that a reunion between Mack and Chicago could be the most logical outcome if both franchises continued heading in their current directions. Mack enjoyed a dominant stint with Chicago from 2018 to 2021, and the Bears also showed interest in bringing him back during the 2025 free agency period.

Jones’ initial report also provided some insight into Mack’s potential trade value. A general manager and an assistant general manager from two different teams viewed his market value as being worth a fifth-round draft pick.

That assessment showed Chicago could potentially acquire Mack without having to surrender significant draft capital.

However, Jones gave an update on the discussion on Saturday, reporting that the Chargers have confounded teams by not engaging in trade talks. Despite being winless, Los Angeles has reportedly continued telling interested teams that Mack is not available.

This ultimately triggered reactions from many fans.

“The 0-6 Los Angeles Chargers are holding players hostage lmao,” one said.

“0-6 Chargers holding a 35-year-old edge rusher on a 1-year deal hostage is insane lol,” another added.

Mack has continued to produce respectable numbers despite the Chargers’ disappointing season. Through the first six games of the season, he has 11 solo tackles, 8 assists, and 3.0 sacks. Mack’s performances have earned him an 81.5 grade in PFN Edge Rusher Impact Metric, placing him at No. 19 among edge defenders.

That is why not everyone was amused by the Chargers’ decision to keep him off the market.

“0-6 team: ‘he’s not available’. I used to feel bad for the Chargers and hoped they’d do well at times. Now they don’t deserve the sympathy; they deserve exactly what they’re getting,” a fan wrote.

“The Chargers not selling is GM malpractice,” another remarked.

Mack signed a one-year, $18 million deal with the Chargers, which includes $8 million in base salary.

With the Chargers having already paid Mack’s $10 million signing bonus, an acquiring team would be responsible for his remaining $8 million base salary. A deal near the November 10 deadline would leave approximately $4 million in salary for the acquiring team to accommodate in its books.
