Renée Slegers excited for “special’ North London Derby

The Gunners are currently eighth in the WSL table with six points from six games, and winless since the opening day at Brighton.

They’ve only lost one of their last seven trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium though, back in December 2023 when Marta Thomas scored the only goal for.

Ahead of their latest encounter tomorrow, Slegers shared how special a game it was for her.

“I don’t know how many I’ve been a part of now, North London derbies, but it’s become special to me as well after these years at Arsenal.

“I know what it feels like, what it means for so many people.

“So I look forward to it, I look forward to the occasion. I look forward to seeing our team in red going against them and giving absolutely everything on the pitch, and then again with the fans. So I look forward to the occasion tomorrow.”

It’s the third game in a row which Martin Ho’s side will face a side from the capital, though the last two haven’t exactly gone to plan, with a 6-1 loss at home to London City Lionesses, before getting hit for six again last week, with a 6-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea.

Slegers believed that Arsenal needed to be prepared for Spurs to continue with their high-risk football or slip into a more defensive shape, which has caused the Gunners issues so far this season.

“They play high-risk, high-reward football; that’s their identity. I can’t go into the coach’s mind and into their camp and what they’re thinking.

“I would say they have a strong identity and want to play the way they have been playing. If they adjust against us, that could be possible, but yeah, let’s see tomorrow. We’ll have to be prepared for both.”

After the 1-1 draw to Birmingham last weekend, Slegers claimed that the current situation would be much worse if they weren’t playing the Arsenal way, and expanded on what she exactly meant by that.

“I think how we look to dominate in possession, how we look to be unpredictable and fluid with our positioning, how we want to break lines, get a lot of bodies forward on the pitch when we attack, all those things.

“We haven’t rewarded ourselves when we get into the final third by the final pass, the final cross, the final finish, and what we set up in those moments, and the composure in those moments.

“Then the same on the other side of the ball: just be aggressive and be really compact and a hardworking team.

“I think you’ve seen that as well. I think it’s about both boxes, where we’ve been vulnerable at the back with a couple of breaks. I think we still have the lowest shots conceded in the league, but when opposition comes through, it goes fast, and we need to manage that better.

“So it’s really about both boxes and what happens in between. We absolutely need to maintain the start and the finish on both sides of the ball and must be better.”

Heading into the derby, Slegers was once again asked about her future as head coach, and whilst admitting that results had been very poor, she was thinking more of how the team could progress.

“That’s not something I think about.”

“It’s about ‘where are we?’ as a group and ‘what are we working towards?’ It’s absolutely not what we expected and what we wanted.

“Eight games into the season, I’m in the here and now, and we are preparing for the North London derby tomorrow.”

“We have the group together. Everyone is going in the same direction and, like I just said, the fuel and the motivation are sky-high because of the fans that will be there for us, and that’s where my focus is at the moment.”
