The Houston Texans believe that running back David Montgomery is improving from his gron injury suffered in the victory over the Tennessee Tiitans.

That doesn't mean he'll be cleared to play on Sunday when Houston travels to Los Angeles to take on a winless Chargers team.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans already ruled out Montgomery following Wednesday's practice. He's still being viewed as a "week-to-week" injury until further notice in the eyes of the AFC South franchise.

"We're still trying to get him on the field, trying to get him going. But right now, it's still week to week. He has made some progress," Ryans said.

Montgomery, the star acquisition for Houston this offseason in a trade from the Detroit Lions, hasn't played since the Oct. 11 game in Nashville. Before that, he had been one of the Texans' bigger disappointments, averaging less than 4.0 yard per carry and failing to score in four straight games.

So far this season, Montgomery has totaled 52 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He's also collected seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown reception, all coming in Week 1's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Since Montgomery has been sidelined, second-year running back Woody Marks has taken over a bulk of the carries. In the past three games, Marks has totaled 49 carries for 184 yards and seven catches for 63 yards, including an 18-yard pass in the Week 6 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars to set up a game-winning field goal from Kai'imi Fairbairn.

This season, Houston's run game woes have declined after a woeful season in 2025. The Texans ranked 29th in rushing, averaging 84.7 yards per game. Houston's 3.6 yards per carry rank 30th overall, only being surpassed by the Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders.
