Before Shadab and Rauf: Ten great last-wicket partnerships

Ten of the greatest last-wicket partnerships in cricket history.

Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan produced one of cricket’s most extraordinary comebacks in Lahore last week, combining for an unbeaten 89-run 10th-wicket partnership to take Pakistan to a one-wicket win over England. It was a remarkable partnership, but how does it compare to other famous final stands?

Here are ten more last-wicket partnerships from cricket history that deserve to be remembered.

#10 Deryck Murray & Andy Roberts

West Indies were chasing 267 against Pakistan in the inaugural World Cup when they collapsed to 203-9. With 64 still required, wicketkeeper Deryck Murray was joined by fast bowler Andy Roberts, and the pair had a steep climb ahead of them. Murray did most of the scoring as their unbeaten partnership carried West Indies to a one-wicket victory with two balls remaining. Murray finished on 61, with Roberts on 24. The win proved a turning point in West Indies’ campaign, with captain Clive Lloyd later reflecting: “There was no way we weren’t going to win the World Cup after that game, the confidence it gave us going forward was immense.”

More than 50 years later, it was this record that Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf broke for the highest 10th-wicket stand in a successful ODI chase.

#9 Saeed Ajmal & Mohammad Amir

The only partnership on our list to end in defeat came in Pakistan’s chase of 212 against New Zealand, when they collapsed to 101-9.

17-year-old Mohammad Amir was joined by Saeed Ajmal, with 111 still needed and the game seemingly gone. But Amir kept finding the boundary while Ajmal played a crucial supporting role, and together they added 103 runs to bring Pakistan within touching distance of victory.

The stand ended when Ajmal fell to the first ball of the final over, with Pakistan needing eight to win. Despite the defeat, Amir was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 73 and two wickets.

#8 Denesh Ramdin & Tino Best

West Indies were 357-9 against England when Tino Best joined Denesh Ramdin. Best, playing his first Test in almost three years, proceeded to produce the innings of his life. He attacked England’s bowlers with remarkable confidence, scoring 95 and narrowly missing a place in history as the first No.11 to score a Test century. Ramdin finished unbeaten on 107, and their 143-run partnership lifted West Indies to 426. The partnership also came with a subplot. On day three of the previous Test, Viv Richards said the West Indies batters were “immature”, and that Ramdin in particular looked “totally lost”. Upon reaching three figures, Ramdin celebrated by pulling a note out of his pocket that had the words, “Yea Viv, talk nah,” hitting back directly at Richards’ criticism.

#7 Inzamam-ul-Haq & Mushtaq Ahmed

Australia looked set for a Test victory in Pakistan after 35 long years, when Mushtaq Ahmed joined Inzamam-ul-Haq with the hosts on 258-9, still 56 short of their target.

However, the pair launched an incredible counterattack, taking 53 runs off the next eight overs.

With three needed, Inzamam charged Shane Warne but missed, only for Ian Healy to fumble the stumping chance. The ball scooted for four byes, allowing Pakistan to get over the line.

#6 Kusal Perera & Vishwa Fernando

Sri Lanka needed 304 to win at Durban, but their hopes looked finished when they slipped to 226-9 against a formidable South African attack. Kusal Perera, however, was still at the crease. He launched an extraordinary counterattack, while No.11 Vishwa Fernando focused on surviving at the other end. The pair chipped away at the target 10 runs at a time, adding an unbeaten 78 to set a record for the highest 10th-wicket partnership in a successful fourth-innings chase. Perera finished unbeaten on 153 as Sri Lanka won by one wicket.

#5 James Faulkner & Clint McKay

With 57 runs needed in six overs and only one wicket remaining, James Faulkner and Clint McKay pulled off an extraordinary finish at the Gabba. Australia were 244-9 when McKay joined Faulkner, who was 14 off 23 balls. But, he immediately shifted gears, smashing five sixes off Ben Stokes before hitting three successive boundaries off Tim Bresnan in the final over to seal a one-wicket win. McKay contributed just two runs in the partnership, but his nine-ball stay was vital nonetheless.

#4 Ben Stokes & Jack Leach

Ben Stokes produced one of the greatest innings in Test history at Headingley in 2019, dragging England to an improbable one-wicket victory over Australia. Chasing 359 to level the series, England were 286-9 when Jack Leach joined Stokes at the crease, with 73 runs still needed. Stokes kept the chase alive while Leach held firm at the other end, scoring just one run off 17 balls. Stokes eventually struck the winning boundary to finish unbeaten on 135 and seal a remarkable victory.

#3 Monty Panesar & James Anderson

James Anderson features again in our list, but this time for a very different kind of last-wicket stand. In the 2009 Cardiff Ashes Test, England were on the brink of defeat when Paul Collingwood fell for 74 at 233-9, with the hosts still six runs short of avoiding an innings defeat Anderson and No.11 Monty Panesar were left to face the final 11.3 overs. Against the odds, they held on until time ran out, securing a draw for England. The pair added just 19 runs, but their resilience under pressure proved decisive in denying Australia victory. England went on to regain the Ashes that summer, making the escape an important early moment in a memorable series.

#2 Joe Root & James Anderson

Replying to India’s first-innings total of 457, England were 298-9 and looked set to concede a substantial lead. But Joe Root and James Anderson had other ideas. Anderson, whose previous Test best was 34, went on to score 81, the highest Test score by an England No.11, while Root finished unbeaten on 154. Their 198-run partnership remains the highest for the 10th wicket in Test cricket. England went from staring at a significant first-innings deficit to taking a 39-run lead, although the match eventually ended in a draw.

#1 Ken Mackay & Lindsay Kline

Requiring 460 to win, Australia slumped to 207-9 against Frank Worrell’s formidable West Indies. Defeat looked inevitable for the hosts. But Ken Mackay and Lindsay Kline refused to give up. Mackay, an all-rounder, and Kline, Australia’s No.11, dug in against an attack that included Wes Hall, Lance Gibbs and Garry Sobers. Mackay finished unbeaten on 62, with Kline on 15, as the pair survived for 110 minutes to secure a draw. They added just 66 runs, but their time at the crease made this one of cricket’s great match-saving efforts.
