A dramatic moment unfolded during Daniil Medvedev's quarter-final clash in Vienna when a ball kid collapsed at the rear of the court and was subsequently carried off on a stretcher.

The No. 3 seed was competing against Adrian Mannarino and had already secured an early break in a lengthy opening game. Mannarino was serving at 0-2 (40-30) when umpire Manuel Messina abruptly called a let, having spotted the ball kid go down behind Medvedev.

"Wait, stop," Messina instructed both players.

Commentator Peter Marcarto reacted with concern: "Oh no. What's happened at the back here?" before quickly grasping the situation. "A ball kid has fallen. Unfortunate in terms of timing there, but great vision from the umpire there to spot that immediately. Both [him and Mannarino] were right onto that. When matters like this happen, the focus is not on the tennis."

Two fellow ball kids immediately rushed to assist, joined by Medvedev and the umpire, while a court official and a bottle of water were swiftly brought over.

Marcarto further praised the tour's medical response, adding: "A good part about these events on the ATP Tour is that in terms of medical care, they're the very best here. And they're straight out and ready to go. Not only for the spectators, but also for ball kids or anyone else who needs assistance."

Medvedev and Mannarino returned to their benches as medical staff rushed over to attend to the ball kid, assisting them onto a stretcher. The crowd applauded as the youngster was helped to their feet.

Messina remained close by the ball kid's side, supporting them onto the stretcher before returning to his position.

"It seems as if he fainted. Not nice to see at all," co-commentator Lucie Ahl observed.

Action got back underway roughly five minutes later, with game point on Mannarino's serve needing to be replayed. The umpire expressed gratitude to the crowd and competitors, confirming the score remained 40-30 in the third game.

Following the interruption, the Frenchman's first serve went wide, but he recovered to hold serve and keep pace with Medvedev at 1-2. However, Mannarino suffered another break of serve, allowing the third seed to claim the opening set 6-2.

Medvedev secured two more breaks in the second set to wrap up a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.

The stakes were high for the Russian, as victory sealed his spot at the ATP Finals. This marks the seventh occasion in eight years that Medvedev has qualified for the prestigious year-end tournament.

The world No. 5 was absent from last year's event after failing to accumulate sufficient ranking points to secure qualification.

Medvedev had staged a dramatic comeback in his prior Vienna match, rescuing a match point to defeat Britain's Cameron Norrie on Thursday. The third seed showed visible frustration during that encounter, striking the court surface, but ultimately prevailed in a decisive final-set tiebreak.

Mannarino battled his way through qualifying to secure his spot in the main draw, staging an impressive comeback after being shut out in the opening set by Ignacia Buse, ultimately prevailing 0-6 7-5 6-4. He then pulled off a major upset in round two, defeating No. 8 seed Jakub Mensik, before Medvedev brought his impressive run to an end.
