Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had choice words for Luka Doncic in the Los Angeles Lakers' 127-105 win on Wednesday night.
In the win, Doncic scored in different ways, seemingly taking advantage of whoever the Warriors put in front of him to the tune of 28 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field and 5 of 12 from 3-point land. Among those who defended Doncic was Lendeborg, who did not hold back about facing off against the Lakers star for the first time.
Speaking to reporters after his first NBA game, Lendeborg made it very clear he did not appreciate Doncic's tactics and what he believed was a constant dialogue with the referees throughout the game, as the Warriors ponder the future of another star as he battles an illness.
"I had a lot of respect for him, you know, just watching - I didn't really watch the NBA much, I just watched highlights," Lendeborg began. "Seeing him kill people all the time. But then, being in there firsthand, just watching all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect, man.
"Like, that was awful. Me getting frustrated, it's not about, like, the foul being called. It's about him complaining the entire game.
"And then you get the foul call, congratulations, bro. And then you talk to me, like, you did something great, bro? Come on, dawg. That s---'s weak, you know? So, it kind of threw me off for a little while. Because, like I said, I had so much respect for him."
Despite being a rookie, Lendeborg, who scored 12 points of his own on 5-of-11 shooting from the field, did not back down from jawing with Doncic, telling him he "sucks" and that he could not score on him, showing how he was unafraid to take on one of the annual MVP favorites.
"I said it the whole game," he continued. "I said a couple cuss words, obviously, that's why I got the technical and all that. But I was letting him know.
"Because he was laughing and talking all this because of that one foul call. And he didn't [score], his only bucket on me was a banker from half court."
The NBA's tracking stats backed the rookie's claims, with Doncic scoring nine of his 28 points on Lendeborg. The Lakers' superstar did so on 1-of-5 shooting from the field, going 6-of-6 on his free throw attempts with two turnovers.
Notably, Doncic was one of five Lakers players to score in double digits, with Walker Kessler (26), Austin Reaves (23), Jake LaRavia (10) and Quentin Grimes (10) all backing up the Slovenian superstar.
Lendeborg added, "I know it's a team sport. You know, he had, what did he have? Oh, 28. He had 28 on us as a team.
"Me, I took my matchup personally. Trying not to get caught on the fouls. Trying my best. I was thinking about playing him with my hands behind my back to see if that worked. Probably would have still got a foul called."
The Warriors will be back in action Friday to take on the Memphis Grizzlies at Chase Center.
