Patrick Mullins delighted to support Autism In Racing at Nottingham

Mullins is of course one of the most decorated amateurs in the history of the sport and was persuaded by Autism In Racing founder Bobby Beevers to make a first ever visit to Colwick Park, something the 36-year-old was more than happy to agree to.

Mullins said: “I was speaking to Bobby at the Sir Peter O’Sullevan lunch and he asked me if I would like to do it and I was struck by his enthusiasm and energy for it.

“There’s no racing in Ireland and it is for a good cause, so there’s no reason not to. I was more than happy to help out.”

Mullins is one of nine riders taking to the track at the end of Nottingham’s Wednesday fixture with the aim of raising vital funds in Autism In Racing’s quest to create more welcoming and accessible opportunities across British racing.

Other participants include former jockey turned TV presenter Leonna Mayor, but Mullins could hold the trump card with Dan Skelton providing Mullins with the well-regarded Harry Lowes to ride – a horse last seen finishing second in a competitive handicap at Aintree’s Grand National Festival.

Mullins continued: “I’m riding Harry Lowes for Dan Skelton and JP McManus, he beat our Mighty Park in a point-to-point, so he’s a good one! There’s no official weights though in this race, so I imagine I’ll be the top-weight!

“It’s nice to be involved and I think Dan and JP were keen to support the cause as well.”

Before hopping into the saddle at Nottingham and eager to make the most of his brief visit to the east midlands, Mullins will first head to Huntingdon to ride Jimmyjeroo for Henrietta Knight in the opening Agri Day At Huntingdon Racecourse 10 November Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase.

With that race having an off-time of 1.06pm, he will then have just under three hours to make the 71-mile journey between tracks in his trusty hire car.

“I’ve picked up a ride in the first at Huntingdon, so I’ll be heading there first and then driving straight up to Nottingham for the charity race. It’s worked out well, I think,” explained Mullins.

“I’m flying to Birmingham and I’ll be hiring a car – normally a Fiat Punto or whatever the cheapest option is – and hopefully the timings will work out great.”
