Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic warns of changes against Brentford after Fulham shocker

City face Brentford in the first of two home games in the next week

Sergej Jakirovic will make changes to his Hull City side against Brentford

This weekend's visit of Brentford presents Hull City with a chance to win for the first time since late August, and go some way to banishing the memory of their trip to Fulham a week ago.

City produced what head coach Sergej Jakirovic described as the worst since he took charge over 12 months ago, and he will be looking for a reaction.

The Tigers boss said at Craven Cottage that picking his team to face Keith Andrews' Bees would be a lot easier than normal, given how poor they were in the capital, and he says that remains the case going into the weekend, even after a good week on the training field.

Jakirovic said the players would watch the game back as part of their post-match analysis, and with calmer heads after the obvious anger and frustration immediately after the match.

"They were too far from everything," the Tigers boss told Hull Live when asked what his charges made of it. "Even at the start of the game, in the first 10 to 15 minutes, we were compact, everything is good, the shuffle is good, but when you try to win the challenge without contact, you cannot play against Fulham because they have a few very good players, especially when they turn with the ball, and they can pass you. We had a lack of aggression in this contact, even make a foul in the middle. They were quicker at the end of the day.

"Yes," Jakirovic then said when asked if he'd noticed a reaction in training this week. "We tried to have a higher intensity of our training session because we need it, especially for the players who are returning after injury. On the pitch, it's difficult for them because even if you don't start the game, if I put you there at half-time or on 60 minutes, you have to show impact because this is an opportunity for you and the chance to play.

"When we watched the game again and analysed this, I can say it was an excellent meeting because you can see for yourself. If you play at this level without aggression, without body contact, or to try to win the first or second ball, you will have a lot of problems.

"That happened on Saturday. Now we have to look forward. It was a tough weekend for us, but we had all week to train well, a few good training sessions to try to improve some things and also with new players who joined us in the training session after their problems. We have another chance to put it right and prove that it was just a bad day at the office. We must show a reaction."

The City boss also suggested at Craven Cottage that picking the team would be an awful lot easier given the manner of the performance, and he hinted there would be changes, but not as many as some may be expecting.

"Yes," he said before laughing about potential changes and being understandably coy. "You will see on Sunday. There will be a few changes. I will not mention the names, but a few changes, and we also have options on the bench, which is good, so a few changes."

City will welcome back Mohamed-Ali Cho and Lucas Gourna-Douath after a two-match absence through injury, but Nobel Mendy and Matt Targett remain on the absent list. Tim Iroegbunam and Hidemasa Morita could be drafted in after coming off the bench in London, before going on to explain why more of the new signings haven't been seen.

"We have Tim (Iroegbunam), we have Morita; at least one of them is ready to start," he added. "It's not Football Manager. Sometimes people wonder why these players are not playing; it's because they have had problems. I would be very happy if they had been training with us for the last month. Morita has already had an injury twice since he came. He had a groin injury and then a calf problem after Coventry when he came off at half-time.

"Tim (Iroegbunam) had a problem with his knee after Newcastle, and he didn't train for three weeks. He also pushed to play against Everton, which is completely normal. Then, after the game, you see he's struggling because you're speaking with the players, which is completely normal.

"Some new players haven't convinced me that they're ready and they're better than what we have right now because of these problems. Some joined us, too late, and we also won nine points, so you have to respect this. Now you can change some, but I will not change the whole team. This is impossible, but some positions we will change."
