Callaghan not focused on MLS record as history beckons for Nashville

Nashville SC are on the verge of making MLS history ahead of this weekend's clash with the New York Red Bulls, but BJ Callaghan said his focus was on his team's approach.

Having already secured the Supporters' Shield, Nashville have the chance to match the single-season points record should they claim all three points at GEODIS Park.

Callaghan's side have earned 71 points so far, and should they claim a 22nd league win of the campaign, they would match the tally Inter Miami managed in 2024 (74).

They will then have the chance to break that record in their final match of the regular season, which comes against FC Cincinnati on Decision Day next weekend.

Nashville could have been even closer to achieving the feat against the Red Bulls, but they were forced to share the spoils in a 0-0 draw with the Philadelphia Union last time out.

Callaghan, however, insisted his main priority was getting a performance out of his players, who he said had performed well after the "emotional highs" of recent weeks.

"We want to try and win every game and that [the records] become an outcome of that approach," Callaghan said. "We'll get some rest and continue to put out a good team.

"Overall, with everything this group has gone through in the last seven to 10 days between the emotional highs, I'm proud of the way in which they came out and competed.

"The team played with good intensity and great mentality. I was proud of the approach to the game, but there's always areas we can improve."

For the Red Bulls, meanwhile, their spot in the playoffs is anything but confirmed. New York find themselves in 10th in the Eastern Conference ahead of taking on Nashville.

Should results go against them this weekend, they could see their postseason hopes go up in smoke, and they did not help themselves by losing in midweek.

Having come from two goals down to go level with the New England Revolution by the 64th minute, Daniel Gazdag scored the winning goal seven minutes from time.

It was a match where the Red Bulls had their chances, generating an expected goals (xG) total of 2.41 to New England's tally of 1.89, and Michael Bradley bemoaned his side's inability to capitalise on their opportunities in the final third.

"It's a frustrating one," Bradley said. "We're a good team and our package of ideas, the way that we play, the way that we can push games, regardless of who we play against, regardless of where – that part is good.

"But in order to take the big step as a team, you have to be able to be there in the decisive moments.

"When you do all of the work to create big chances in the box, then you have to score them. You have to finish plays off."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nashville – Hany Mukhtar

Mukhtar was the only Nashville player to have multiple shots (two) in Wednesday's goalless draw, but he was held without a shot on target.

That ended Mukhtar's streak of five straight MLS matches with multiple shots on target, tied for the third-longest streak in team history.

NYRB – Julian Hall

Hall scored his 12th goal of the 2026 regular season in New York's loss to New England on Wednesday.

He needs one more goal to tie Diego Fagundez (2013) and Ricardo Pepi (2021) for the most goals in a single season by an MLS player prior to turning 19 years old.

MATCH PREDICTION: NASHVILLE WIN

After failing to win any of their first seven meetings with NYRB, scoring just one goal (D4 L3), Nashville have won two in a row in the series, including a 1-0 road win on August 19. The nine all-time meetings have seen a total of just 11 goals scored.

Nashville's goalless draw with Philadelphia was the club's 16th clean sheet of the regular season, the third most in a single term in MLS history. Kansas City in 2000 and LA Galaxy in 2011 recorded 17 regular-season shutouts, and both of those teams went on to win the MLS Cup.

NYRB hit 11 shots on target in their defeat to New England on Wednesday. It was their second loss over the last 15 seasons when they had more than 10 shots on target in a regular-season match (also in April 2018 against Chicago Fire).

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Nashville – 63.7%
