Charlton 1-3 Norwich: Davitt Championship player ratings

Daniel Grimshaw                8

Big show of faith from Philippe Clement with Vladan Kovacevic back fit. Did not let himself, his head coach or the travelling support down. Excellent smothering stop to halt Tyreece Campbell with only 20 seconds on the clock.

Was out again to the edge of his area but Charlie Kilman veered around the keeper. But Grimshaw came out on top when they renewed acquaintances in the 64th minute with a full length parry that ricocheted off Kilman for a goal kick. 56 touches in total and 70pc passing accuracy.

 Jack Stacey             7

Thought he had put Norwich in front when he slotted Pelle Mattsson’s pass but ruled offside. Adventure in a first half when City were able to establish growing control of central midfield. Made the overlapping run for Ruairi McConville but Billy Koumetio cleared at his near post.

Available again for an Oscar Schwartau switch in the 26th minute, but cross was cut out. Raced over halfway in the 48th minute before feeding Paris Maghoma, who superbly picked out the lunging Andre Brooks to sidefoot wide from 12 yards.

Big late block on Karlan Grant. Five defensive clearances and won all seven of his ground duels. His 72 touches only bettered by McConville.

Ruairi McConville               8

Excellent stepping in to try and spark the play. A match-leading 83 touches and 12 defensive contributions. 86pc passing accuracy.

The curling driven cross to the back post for Mathias Kvistgaarden deserved the emphatic finish. Strong to close the door on Kelman in the 32nd minute.

Near post sliding block on Grant earned him pats from his team mates. For a split-second his reaction suggested he thought he had headed into his own net to draw the Addicks level, but the goal was disallowed for Kelman standing a fraction offside at the point of delivery.

Harry Darling                                   7

Another big call, to replace Jose Cordoba. Failed to sense the danger from a central long ball that bounced through for Campbell, but Daniel Grimshaw was out sharply to smother.

Pass into Oscar Schwartau had enough pace on it but the Dane was on his heels and robbed by Kayne Ramsay, who released Joe Rankin-Costello for Kelman’s finish. Showed his physicality to stay strong in a duel with Campbell tight to his own touchline.

Won all his ground duels and 50pc of his aerial challenges. Raced across to halt Micah Mibek, with the aid of some shirt-puling from Sam Field that went undetected.

Ben Chrisene                                  7

Worrying moment late on when he needed a medical assessment on the pitch as he clutched the shoulder that sidelined him early in the season.

But waved away Clement’s attempts to replace him with Darlin Yongwa. Got a thumping embrace from Harry Darling Faye he got his body between the cross and Rankin-Costello at the back post in the 54th minute.

More circumspect in advanced areas than Jack Stacey in the first half. One header led to Mattsson slapping a rising shot over the bar, following the first concerted spell of City possession.

Underlapping run for Schwartau, who went for the lift but Arthur Okonkwo saved. 88pc pass accuracy and four interceptions.

Jacob Wright                       7

Got two shots away but his chief threat came from his deadball mastery. Delicious corner landed in the middle of the six yard box but no takers in the 45th minute. Curling effort palmed away by Okonkwo at full stretch in the closing stages.

Less precise in the first half when he opened up his body but carved well over on his left. 67pc accuracy with his long range passing.

Clement indicated he departed at the interval as a precaution with cramp in his hamstrings. Sloppy in the fifth minute when his aimless pass from deep was recycled by Charlton for Sonny Carey, who saw his shot blocked.

But that was the exception with a match-high 89pc passing accuracy rate. Not able to get out quick enough to halt Rankin-Costello for the home opener. Fired over in the 21st minute from the edge of the area.

Andre Brooks                                 7

Positive step in the right direction after unconvincing recent displays. Front foot as City looked to press high and use the width. But moved centre stage in the second half.

Leaning back and on the stretch, he would have felt he should hit the target from Maghoma’s pinpoint cutback. But his ratting on the floor allowed him to switch the play for McConville, to pick out the towering leap of Kvistgaarden.

Miscued effort in the 74th minute flew wide from Jacob Wright and Kenny McLean’s turnover work. Had a match-equalling highest number of shots, with three, and five touches in the Addicks’ penalty area.

Paris Maghoma                              7

Controlled finish of some quality to sweep a right footed effort into the roof of Okonkwo’s net to draw Norwich level. Turned provider in the second half with a cutback that was begging to be finished from Andre Brooks.

On the hunt again in the 61st minute when he tried to take McLean’s sharp pass in his stride but it bounced towards Kvistgaarden to volley.

Defensive work is not what you would associate with Maghoma, but did all he could to try and halt Campbell on a counter that needed a fine Grimshaw stop. 88pc passing accuracy and six passes into the final third.

Osar Schwartau                             6

Foiled by Okonkwo quickly off his line in the 61st minute from Ben Chrisene’s side rule ball. On his heels to allow Ramsay to nip in and spark the opener. Controlled Grimshaw’s drilled pass to release Stacey but the cross was cut out. Only 69pc passing accuracy and 43 touches.

Mathias Kvistgaarden                               8

Took his tally for the Championship season to an impressive five goal contributions in nine appearances. Packed a lot in for 22 touches. Only Anthony Musaba carried a higher expected goals return.

Powerful well-timed header despatched McConville’s deep cross. The skill for the leveller was just as sharp.

Plucked a ball out of the air and then lifted over Ramsay before a superb slashing pass into the channel for Maghoma to finish. Waited an eternity in the 22nd minute to the ball on his right when clean through, allowing Koumetio to converge.

Sign of his confidence was how he instantly controlled an inadvertent touch from Maghoma, before unleashing a volley that flew over.

Subs:

Kenny McLean (for Mattsson, 45)                       7

McLean back after injury and Norwich exert a pleasing measure of game management control. No coincidence. Thread for Maghoma run that spiralled towards Kvistgaarden to smash over.

Sam Field (for Maghoma, 65)                   5

Touch fortunate his shirt pulling on Micah Mibek, as he raced into the Norwich box, did not get punished.

Jovon Makama (for Kvistgaarden, 75)                5

A robust cameo. Pinned Lloyd Jones with such force the Charlton defender was felled. His pressing also disrupted Charlton’s attempts to move the ball from the back.

Anthony Musaba (for Brooks, 75)                       7

Quite the cameo with Charlton’s desperation obvious, leaving space in behind on the counter. One stepover and three body swerves led to a cross turned in by Ivan Mesik at his near post.

Must have thought he had added a fourth when he controlled Yongwa’s pass and rolled Alan Mwamba but the shot hit Okonkwo between his legs and veered wide of his right hand post.

Perfectly-released pass for Musaba to twist into a shooting position.
