Former Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Nick Montgomery has provided a candid, eye-opening account of his tenure under Ange Postecoglou during the 2024/25 campaign. Speaking in an interview with Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport and shared by Hotspur Lane on X, Montgomery detailed the initial conversation that brought him to North London, the unforgettable scenes of the Europa League trophy parade, and the internal realization that managerial change was imminent regardless of their success.
Montgomery recalled how a single direct conversation with Postecoglou convinced him to join the coaching setup at Hotspur Way without hesitation. Postecoglou’s unwavering belief in delivering silverware to Tottenham proved to be the decisive factor.
“Ange contacted me, we jumped on a call, and he said, ‘I’m going to win a trophy at Tottenham. I want you to come and help me.’ To be honest, I didn’t really need to think about it much. It was a pretty quick decision, and one I definitely don’t regret. Seeing the Tottenham fans at the parade with the trophy was something you can never forget.”
That prophecy was fulfilled as Tottenham ended their long trophy drought by lifting the Europa League title in Bilbao, securing both major silverware and a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the following season.
Despite the historic triumph on the pitch, Montgomery revealed that the coaching staff operated under the distinct shadow of an impending departure. Rather than allowing surrounding noise to derail their campaign, the staff channeled their complete energy into securing European glory.
“Everyone knew there was going to be a change no matter what happened, so you have that laser focus on what you can control, and that was winning the Europa League.”
