Butch Harmon absolutely adores the Ryder Cup.
The legendary golf coach often names the biennial competition as his favorite event in the sport.
The Ryder Cup has obviously grown significantly in popularity over the past few decades.
The clash between the United States and Europe creates incredible excitement every single time.
How did you end up falling in love with the game?
The Europeans have dominated the event since 1995, winning 11 of the past 15 showdowns with America.
Regardless of which team wins the event, golf fans the world over are never let down as far as entertainment value is concerned.
However, Butch Harmon believes the Ryder Cup has the scope to become even more exciting than it already is.
Harmon has been speaking on the No Laying Up Podcast this week about a wide range of topics.
The 83-year-old responded when asked to share his thoughts on the Ryder Cup.
“Don’t you think the Ryder Cup would be better if they do it like the Presidents Cup does? If they said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna pick my first one, who do you want’? ‘Okay, I’m gonna put so and so up there’,“ Harmon said.
“Then you get the matchups you want, and that’s what we want to see. We wanna see the matchups.
“We want to see the guys, we want to see Rory and Scheffler, going head-to-head against each other. We want to see this. This is what we want to see.
“That’s the one thing I would change in the Ryder Cup I would say, let’s just put the names up one by one. You pick, I pick, you pick, I pick. Then we get the matches. Then it gets even better.
“Then, because you can get two guys that you know don’t like each other playing against each other, and that’s when it gets fun.“
Harmon makes an interesting point here. The way in which the Presidents Cup captains make their selections alternately, one by one, makes for great theatre.
Now, the Ryder Cup is not short of theatre, but it’s fair to argue that selecting the singles matches in the same way they do at the Presidents Cup would make things even more exciting.
