The Seattle Seahawks rocked the NFL world Tuesday morning by trading for the Indianapolis Colts’ star guard, Quenton Nelson.
While the Colts trading Nelson isn’t a surprise, it’s what Indianapolis got in return that has social media chattering.
Did the Seahawks underpay in draft capital for one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL?
The Colts traded Nelson to the defending Super Bowl champions for a 2027 third- and 2028 fifth-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
There’s a lot of context that goes into why that is the compensation Indianapolis received.
First off, Nelson is set to be a free agent at the ned of the season. So, from the Colts’ perspective, trading Nelson guarantees draft compensation now rather than risking losing him in free agency and potentially waiting until 2028 for a compensatory pick.
However, Nelson is also an eight-time Pro Bowler and known around the league as one of the very best at his position. So, a third- and fifth-round pick could seem a bit low for what Nelson is worth.
So, the NFL world believes the Colts got fleeced in the trade, and PFN’s Trade Machine agrees.
“JOHN, YOU RASCAL. WHAT A STEAL,” a Seahawks fan page wrote on X.
“A MASSIVE get for Seattle. As the Seahawks look to boost their rushing attack, adding Nelson helps that,” ESPN’s Field Yates said.
“A 3RD AND A 5TH?? Holy FLEECE not even close to what they were asking for,” NFL draft analyst Josh Taylor said.
“Colts net way less than Nelson’s worth. Good for Seattle. Gotta wonder if a full fire sale is coming if they were willing to take this little for someone as good as Nelson,” Colts and NFL Draft analyst Destin Adams said.
“What a steal for the Seahawks…,” NFL analyst Mitchell Renz said.
Then there’s the Cam Jurgens trade that happened earlier in October. Philadelphia traded Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Baltimore for a 2027 fifth-rounder and a 2028 second-round pick, a larger return than Indianapolis received for Nelson.
There were also some fans who wished their teams would have gotten Nelson for the price Seattle paid, and one who expects other NFC West teams to get in on the action now.
“Patriots should’ve taken this deal…,” Patriots beat writer Zach Gatsby said.
“Welp. I would’ve done that deal for the #Broncos Sigh,” Denver sports talk host Ryan Edwards said.
“The NFC arms race is on… John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, we’re looking at you!” Marc Grandi reacted.
The Seahawks, who just smoked the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, now get one of the best offensive linemen in the game.
Nelson has ranked inside the top five among all offensive linemen, according to PFSN’s OL Impact, in the last two years. He’s done so four times and has ranked outside the top 50 only once in his eight-year career.
