Robert Andrich said he "had to swallow hard" after seeing Loic Bade's injury up close during Bayer Leverkusen's 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim on Sunday.
Leverkusen saw their five-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga come to an end at SNP Arena, with a late flurry inspired by Andrej Kramaric sealing the victory for the hosts.
Kramaric opened the scoring in the 79th minute with a penalty, but in the lead-up to Hoffenheim's second, there was a nasty clash of heads between Bade and Max Moerstedt.
Referee Daniel Siebert did not stop the match and allowed play to continue, with Alexander Prass the beneficiary as he rifled past Mark Flekken and into the roof of the net.
Bade received treatment and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, with Moerstedt compounding Leverkusen's misery in stoppage time, despite Hoffenheim seeing Prass sent off for taking his shirt off after scoring his goal.
Leverkusen suffered just their second defeat of this Bundesliga season. Across the last two campaigns, they have won only one of their last five league away games (D1 L3).
However, the concern remained centred around the condition of Bade, with Andrich saying the collision was almost too difficult to stomach, having been close to the incident.
When asked whether Bade was responsive on the pitch, Andrich replied: "No, not really.
"First and foremost, we definitely hope that Loic gets better soon. You really had to swallow hard because it was a heavy collision."
A tough day today. Thank you for your support, Lev. #TSGB04 https://t.co/0MttTWIYCv

The result keeps Leverkusen fourth in the Bundesliga and already four points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, after seven games of the season.
Hoffenheim, meanwhile, celebrated their biggest Bundesliga victory since mid-February of this year, when they won 3-0 at home against Freiburg.
Under Christian Ilzer, the club have only recorded a bigger margin of victory in the Bundesliga, a 5-1 triumph against Borussia Monchengladbach in mid-January of this year.
Kramaric also scored Hoffenheim's 1,000th Bundesliga goal and reached the mark of 200 direct goal involvements in the competition.
Since detailed data collection in 2004-05, only Robert Lewandowski (367), Thomas Muller (323), and Marco Reus (251) have recorded more than his 201 goal involvements (141 goals, 60 assists), with Mario Gomez also on 201.
