Nasser Hussain slams Lancashire for not renewing James Anderson's contract

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has criticised Lancashire's decision not to offer James Anderson a new deal, calling it a hugely sad way for the veteran seamer to end his county career.

Lancashire decided not to renew James Anderson's contract for the 2027 season; the club informed the 44-year-old seamer during the week of October 21, 2026. The move ends Anderson's association with the county he joined in 2002, a relationship spanning 24 years.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain was sharply critical of the decision. Hussain was the England skipper who selected Anderson from Lancashire Second XI for the 2002 tour of Australia, and he expressed disbelief at how the county had handled the situation.

"I don’t know what the financial situation is at Lancashire, so I don’t want to comment too much on whether it’s right or wrong, but it just didn’t seem to me to be the change that you need to make at that club. I’m just not sure it’s the way you treat such a legend of the club," Hussain wrote in a column for Sky Sports.

Why did Hussain feel Lancashire's decision was wrong?

Hussain pointed to Anderson's performances in the 2026 County Championship season as evidence that the seamer still had plenty to offer. Anderson captained Lancashire in Division Two of the County Championship in 2026 and claimed 50 wickets at an average of 17, figures that Hussain argued made the non-renewal difficult to justify on cricketing grounds alone. Hussain also referenced England's 1-4 Ashes defeat in Australia during the 2024-25 series, suggesting Anderson would have contributed meaningfully had he been selected.

"He would have bowled alright in Australia last winter, I tell you. He'd have bowled better than some that bowled out there and he bowled better than some that bowled for Lancashire this summer and have done for the last 26 years," Hussain elaborated.

England's decision to move Anderson on after his final Test in July 2024 against West Indies was, in Hussain's view, 'a marginal call at best'. Hussain was unequivocal in his verdict on Lancashire's latest call.

"I can't believe that he's going to be treated like this and he deserves a bit better," Hussain stated.

No specific reason for declining to renew Anderson's contract has been publicly disclosed by Lancashire. The club appointed Richard Kenyon as chief executive and Paul Farbrace as director of cricket in October 2026, and Hussain speculated that financial considerations at the county may have played a role, though he stopped short of making a firm judgement on that front.

Could Anderson continue his career elsewhere?

Despite the disappointment of Lancashire's decision, Hussain believes Anderson's career may not be over. He argued that the seamer's skill level and physical condition remain high enough to attract interest from other counties. Hussain elaborated further on what makes Anderson such a valuable proposition.

"I’d say most counties in the country would take Anderson, even at the age of 44. When I watched clips of him this summer, he still had that magic about him and the hunger. His skill is just incredible - the control of the ball, the way he changed from being a swing bowler to a wobble seam bowler and a swing bowler, his hunger, his fitness and his longevity. I personally think Lancashire are a better side with a 44-year-old Anderson than without," Hussain wrote.

Anderson's record speaks for itself. He played 188 Tests for England, a tally second only to Sachin Tendulkar, and finished his international career with 704 Test wickets. Whether he will seek a contract with another county or step away from professional cricket entirely remains unconfirmed.
