Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has claimed that the club should always be aiming to win the Premier League, following a disappointing defeat to Arsenal over the weekend.

The Reds came into the game in some fine form across all competitions, with a start to the season that has seen the team show some signs of promise, but with some clear flaws that need to be addressed.

In the early months of the Andoni Iraola reign, Arsenal provided another clear test for the manager to judge his team's ability and the levels they can take it to next. The opening minutes of the match showed an initial gulf in class, as the Gunners took the lead through Kai Havertz.

After recovering, Liverpool then hit back. Chances came and went, but the Reds were simply unable to find a leveler, resulting in just a second defeat of the season so far.

It has left many reflecting on an interesting start to the campaign, with the prospect of a Premier League title charge seeming too far in the distance, while the battle for a Champions League spot may seem underwhelming for a team that always wants to be challenging at the very top.

For those in the dressing room, it can be an odd thing to balance, with everyone wanting to pick up victories each and every week during a streaky start to the season. Szoboszlai, one of the group's leaders, has lamented how variable the Reds' performances can be.

Speaking to Viaplay after Liverpool's defeat to Arsenal, he said: "Some days it feels like we are at the top, and some days it feels like we are not even close. It takes time to be at the top, I think."

The top is exactly where the midfielder and his teammates want to be, however, and he certainly hasn't shied away from making those ambitions clear.

He was asked what a good season for Liverpool would be, and responded: "To win the league. We are Liverpool; we always have to be there with this mindset and then work for it, and let’s see.”

There would certainly need to be some luck and an incredible run for that to happen this season, with a nine-point gap already opening up between the Reds and Arsenal after Sunday's meeting.

Following the defeat, there will be two clear though processes surrounding where Liverpool currently sits in regards to a title push. For some, there may be frustrations that such large transfer expenditure hasn't resulted in success as of yet, with some of the expensive acquisitions yet to truly click in the team.

For others, there may be more of a long-term look to a rebuild from one of the greatest teams in the club's history, with club legends like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson having to be replaced, which is no easy task. With it still being early in the Iraola tenure, there may be some hope that success will eventually follow.

It remains to be seen whether that will come for Liverpool or not, but the signs so far certainly suggest that a title push will be unlikely this season at the very least.
