Emma Raducanu receives welcome ranking boost despite Brit not playing a single match

Emma Raducanu has moved up five places in this week’s WTA rankings, despite not having played a match since June. The Brit has been sidelined by a leg injury, missing Wimbledon, the US Open, and several WTA Tour events. Raducanu dropped out of the top 100 earlier this month, falling to her lowest ranking in two years. While she is still sitting outside the top 100, she rose to No. 104 this week, thanks to some other players around her dropping down.

There have also been some exciting moves for other Brits, as Katie Boulter is back to British No. 1 following a strong run to the Japan Open semi-finals. She now sits at No. 48 in the world, four places above Sonay Kartal, who finished runner-up at the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan just over a week ago.

And teenage star Hannah Klugman jumped up 93 places to a new career-high ranking of No. 248 in the world after winning the Wrexham Open, a W100 event. Klugman, 17, beat former top 60 star Elsa Jacquemot 6-2 6-4 in the final.

Raducanu now has no more points to defend for the rest of the season. Her last appearance in 2025 came at the Ningbo Open, where she lost to Zhu Lin in the first round. It means her ranking could fluctuate over the coming weeks, depending on rivals’ results.

The former US Open champion has been sidelined since reaching the Queen’s final in June. She had to play her last three matches over the course of 28 hours due to rain delays – a spike in load, which seemed to contribute to the lower-leg “niggle” she picked up.

This niggle turned into a stress fracture, forcing Raducanu to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament. She has since returned to training but still has not played a match since June and looks set to remain outside the top 100 going into 2027.

Should Raducanu stay on the sidelines until early next year, she will be able to benefit from an injury-protected ranking, which is afforded to players who have spent at least six months out with an injury. The Brit was ranked inside the top 35 following her run to the Queen’s final in June.

The 23-year-old would be able to enter up to eight tournaments, including two Majors, with a protected ranking if she spends at least six months out. In Raducanu’s case, her protected ranking could be as high as No. 31 in the world, more than enough to get into the main draws of Grand Slams and top WTA Tour events.
