Falmouth Town avenged their early-season defeat away to their visitors, Hayle, with a convincing victory in this WC Parsons Peninsula League Cup tie at Bickland Park.
Falmouth were able to name a strong starting line-up with Scott Kellow, Alex Wharton, Tom Fisher, captain Luke Brabyn and even young Liam Uren all having made appearances in higher leagues in recent seasons.
That being said, they were missing Jak Davies, Levi Hilling, Sam Buckley, George Evans and Ollie Perrow, with Kian Thomas named on the bench after recovery from injury.
It was a great start for Town and they struck within two minutes of the kick-off.
Leeyan Gallas, playing in an unfamiliar right back position, hit a cross from deep into the Hayle box and found the lively Harry Gillett.
An excellent first touch got the ball under his control enabling him to poke it goalwards whilst under pressure from the Hayle defenders.
Falmouth went on to dominate the game with Gillett’s poise and close control, and the authority, skill and energy of Luke Brabyn providing plenty of quality which Hayle struggled to deal with all afternoon.
Falmouth though had to wait for the 30th minute for their next chance of note.
A cross from the impressive left-back Asa Donaldson just evading the on-rushing Alex Wharton arriving late at the far post.
Six minutes later Falmouth deservedly added to their lead.
Having survived a series of Hayle corners in the visitors’ best period of the match, a long clearance found Brabyn deep in the Hayle half.
Brabyn skilfully brought the ball down and hit a powerful shot which the Hayle keeper Caleb Hendy could only parry into the path of Gillett who converted for his second goal of the match.
There were no further goals and Falmouth went into the half-time break with a deserved lead having only been troubled from some Hayle set-pieces earlier in the half.
However, Hayle came out strongly and forced a goal-line clearance in the first minute of the 2nd half so Falmouth knew they were still in a game.
However, the home side took control of the game again and added to the score nine minutes in.
It was Leeyan Gallas who was the provider again, this time with a square ball into the box which found Will Harding, who passed it into the net from just outside of the 6 yard box.
It was the class of Brabyn that crafted the fourth and final goal of the game on 21 minutes, bringing down another aerial ball effortlessly and then dinking it over the top of the Hayle defence with his 2nd touch, finding the pacy Alex Wharton, who made no mistake with a powerful finish steering it past Hendy from the corner of the area.
With the game under control, manager Jonny Perrow was able to utilise his youthful bench and gave a debut to the very promising 16-year-old Olly Gardner.
Gardner showed great confidence taking on his man, cutting in and shooting at every opportunity.
Another 16-year-old, Josh Stephens, then entered the scene making his own debut, and he belied his young years with a hard-running and physical display, again asking questions of the Hayle defence.
That made three players of that age having taken part in the game with the now experienced Liam Uren producing his usual calm and assured display in his central defensive role.
There were no further goals, and Falmouth ran out deserved 4-0 winners, progressing into the next round of the cup, which now opens up to include sides from the East division.
With the draw made the same evening, Falmouth learned that they will have to make the long trip to Ilfracombe.
It will be a great day out for Perrow’s young charges and a chance to gain further experience as they continue their football journey.
Harry Gillett with his two goals was awarded the Man of the Match Award; a bottle of Prosecco kindly donated by Kellow Building Services.
Manager Jon Perrow commented after the game.
"I asked the lads to start strongly today and they certainly didn't let me down.
The tempo was superb throughout the game and some of the passing combinations was a joy to watch.
Four goals and another clean sheet, our 5th in the 12 games so far this season, is very pleasing as we talk about clean sheets and the importance of them.
When you have the striking options we have, we are always going to score goals, so if we can get it right at both ends, then we will win a lot of football matches.
It was wonderful today to see both Olly Gardner and Josh Stephens make their debuts, both only 16 years old, and they joined another 16 year old Liam Uren on the pitch which is what I am all about and just shows there is a clear pathway through the club.
We have now been drawn away to Ilfracombe Town in the last 16 who play in The SWPL East League which will be a real test for the lads, but it is exciting to play a new team and visit a new ground."
