CD Tenerife have released a worrying update over Jesus de Miguel’s condition after the striker was left in intensive care after being knocked out following a sickening collision with Andorra’s goalkeeper.
Monday’s Spanish Segunda Division clash was abandoned in stoppage time after De Miguel appeared to lose consciousness following the foul by Jesus Owono, who was shown a straight red card.
The scores were level at 2-2 when Tenerife cleared the ball and threatened to launch a last-gasp attack through De Miguel. However, Owono clattered the 30-year-old with an appalling challenge.
Owono left the field as De Miguel initially writhed around on the pitch in agony. He then rolled onto his back and appeared to lose consciousness - a sight that left his teammates visibly distressed.
Medical staff sprinted over to provide De Miguel with urgent medical attention, while the game was called off by referee Manuel Angel Perez. Watch the incident below:
Tenerife’s initial statement confirmed De Miguel had been “admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition.
“The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates.”
Meanwhile, Andorra wrote on X (Twitter): “From FC Andorra, we want to send all our strength and best wishes to Jesús de Miguel after the serious incident suffered during today’s match.
“We hope he recovers soon. A very strong hug to the player, his family, and CD Tenerife.”
Per BBC Sport, Spanish media outlets - including Marca - reported De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics while being transported to hospital.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Tenerife released a fresh statement confirming: “Jesus de Miguel's medical condition has worsened neurologically. More information in the coming hours.”
No further details have been given at the time of writing.
Messages of support for De Miguel have poured in from the wider footballing community.
Spanish giants Valencia tweeted: “Stay strong, Jesus! All our support and affection for both Jesus de Miguel and his family, as well as for CD Tenerife and its fans.”
