Braintree Town lost to Farnham in National League South

Any visiting team that concedes two schoolboy error-strewn goals within the first five minutes stands no chance of coming back into any game.

The Iron did just did just that on Saturday but things went from bad to worse, as they conceded four further goals to slump to defeat, leaving them fourth from bottom.

Make no mistake, this was an utter embarrassment for the club, particularly for the Iron fans who made the trip and faced torrential rain throughout yet still vocally trying to urge their team, right to the end.

Farnham’s new striker George Alexander, signed from Hornchurch for a fee, was a constant thorn in the Iron’s dreadfully performing defence all game.

He helped himself to four goals and in reality, could easily have had more.

This was a thrashing for the Iron in every shape and form and every player, subs included, need to take a long, hard look at themselves because yet again they play like individuals, rather than as a team.

This is in total contrast to Farnham, who were a proper, well-coordinated team, better organised, passed the ball to one another and were far more cohesive across the park.

The hosts’ players constantly pulled the Iron side all over the place with their players running the channels, backing one another up when needed and with a defence that was solid but, in all honesty, untested all afternoon.

Too often, Braintree’s players lacked ideas, creativity and simply kept lumping high balls upfield in a hit and hope mode but of course, to no avail.

Alexander had a field day, repeatedly ripping the Iron backline to pieces with his constant movement on and off the ball; how the Iron could do with such a player leading their attack.

The only Braintree player to emerge with any credit from the game was on-loan keeper Ben Hughes, who pulled off several good saves - he must be wondering what sort of cover he has in front of him, in every game.

Iron fans will be hoping there is not a repeat of this thorough beating when they entertain Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
