Challinor 'unanimous choice' to take Owls forward

Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch says Dave Challinor was the "unanimous choice" as the manager to take the club forward.

Challinor was appointed Owls boss on Sunday on a three-and-a-half year contract running until 2030.

The 51-year-old, who left Stockport County in the summer after losing in the League One play-off final, has won promotion at every club that he has managed.

He takes over a Wednesday side ninth in League One, two points outside the play-offs.

"Dave's appointment has the unanimous support of our board, following a thorough recruitment process expertly led by Simon Wilson, and reflects our shared commitment to the long-term future of Sheffield Wednesday," chairman Storch told the club's website.

"We are still at the beginning of an ambitious journey. Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the foundations of the club, but we recognise there is much more work ahead."

Challinor will be joined at Hillsborough by first-team assistant coaches Clint Hill and Antony Sweeney.

His first match in charge will be Sunday's FA Cup first-round tie at League Two Oldham Athletic (17:15 GMT).

The new Owls ownership dismissed Henrik Pedersen following successive defeats by Notts County and Doncaster Rovers and after two games of Matt Hamshaw in interim charge, Challinor will now take over.

He is reunited with Wednesday's sporting director Simon Wilson with the pair having worked successfully together at Stockport.

Wilson says that Challinor's appointment can help with the club's aims of developing a "recognisable playing identity and greater consistency" and shying away from simply a "short-term solution".

"Dave's record speaks for itself," Wilson said.

"He is a proven winner who has consistently built successful teams, improved players and demonstrated an ability to adapt and evolve throughout his career.

"Dave sets exceptionally high standards and challenges everyone around him to improve. He has a proven ability to get more from individuals and teams, and that mentality is central to what we want to establish here."
