The 49ers Enterprises appear to be keen on solidifying the ties between Rangers and Leeds United, two clubs that are under their umbrella.
The investment arm of the NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers fully own Leeds, having completed the takeover in 2023.
In May 2025, they were part of a consortium that was led by Andrew Cavenagh, to acquire a controlling stake in Rangers. Paraag Marathe, the Chairman of Leeds United, is also a board member at the Ibrox outfit.

Scottish football chiefs are considering bringing an end to the Saturday 3pm blackout. What are your thoughts on that? Will it help or hinder things?
Christos Savvakis, the Leeds United Academy Coach, was spotted at Ibrox, and took to LinkedIn to share that he had spent three days at the club. He observed training sessions and matches of the youth sides at different levels.
The Light Blues’ Lead Phase Coach for the Under-11s and Under-12s, John Lawson, is understood to be the one who made the visit happen. Savvakis did spend a good time with some of the other coaches at the club as well, making it three productive days in Glasgow.
He revealed that he had interesting conversations with the people at Rangers, especially about the culture and heritage, and learned important lessons as he aims to become one of the best coaches around.
The UEFA A-licensed coach wrote: “With half-term week on, I had the opportunity to spend three days at Rangers Football Club, observing training sessions and games across the academy, from Foundation Phase through to Professional Development Phase.
“It was great to spend time with the coaching staff, observing the club’s strong culture, approach to player development, recruitment strategies and the processes around player selection/deselection.
“A massive thank you to John Lawson for making the visit happen, looking after me and giving up his time.
“Also, thanks to all the Rangers staff, particularly Alan Boyd, Greg Statt and Curtis Rose, for being so welcoming and open, and for some great football conversations.
“A really enjoyable three days with plenty to take away.”
Having a Premier League academy coach would have given Rangers an informed outside perspective on methodology, coaching quality, culture, and processes. These things are valuable for a club whose new ownership has emphasised elevating the academy.
Under the 49ers model, this is exactly the type of competitive and operational learning Marathe has publicly endorsed, as it was a two-way knowledge exchange that would have benefited both sides. It can cover topics such as periodisation, individual development plans, recruitment filters, transition processes and deselection handling, among other things.
This could also be the start of a broader connection between the two clubs, which includes more informed scouting and recruitment co-operation. Given Leeds’ budgets due to Premier League revenues, they will have more comprehensive access, and that could benefit the Gers as well.
