Key Matchup Detroit Lions Must Win Against Minnesota Vikings

Jared Goff will face one of his stiffest tests of the 2026 season when he takes on the Minnesota Vikings Sunday.

The Vikings’ defense has been the best unit in the entire NFL in 2026, and especially stout against the pass. In fact, the Brian Flores-coordinated unit has permitted the second-fewest yards through the air (930) and the fewest passing touchdowns (three) through seven weeks. Plus, Minnesota has secured the second-most interceptions (seven), spearheaded by Byron Murphy's league-high three picks.

Murphy should play a pivotal role in the Vikings’ efforts to stymie Goff and the Lions’ air attack in this Week 8 divisional clash.

Murphy, a Pro Bowler in 2024, has been rock solid in coverage this season. He's allowed a passer rating of just 53.5 on balls thrown his way, and for his efforts, he's earned a 69.3 pass coverage grade from Pro Football Focus. It not only ranks as the 20th-best mark among 97 qualified cornerbacks this season, but it also is the second-best PFF coverage grade of his eight-year career.

He and fellow Vikings CB Isaiah Rodgers are expected to receive the lion's share of one-on-one reps with Detroit's dynamic pass-catching tandem of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

Rodgers has been the epitome of a shutdown corner thus far in 2026. The 28-year-old has permitted a passer rating of only 46.3 when targeted by opposing quarterbacks, as well as a measly 4.9 yards per reception. It's a large reason why he's currently PFF's second-highest graded corner when it comes to defending the pass (88.7).

Simply, Rodgers and Murphy have both excelled in coverage through the first half of the 2026 campaign. Yet, it hardly means they're going to be able to shut down St. Brown and Williams on Sunday.

St. Brown is one of the most prolific wideouts in the game today, possessing the ability to beat defenders both over the middle of the field and deep. He's caught 46 balls for 525 yards on the season, and is coming off a monstrous nine-catch, 153-yard receiving game against the Green Bay Packers.

Meanwhile, Williams is one of the league's biggest vertical threats, with the ability to slip past defenders with his game-changing speed. He also had a big day against the Packers last week, with nine catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

It wouldn't be surprising to see both St. Brown and Williams end up with a long catch or two going up against Flores’ blitz-heavy scheme.

Subsequently, this matchup between St. Brown and Williams and the aforementioned Vikings CB duo likely favors the Lions – at least slightly.

And all the while, Minnesota will need to do its best to contain Goff. The veteran signal-caller is off to an MVP-caliber start to the season, and has been extremely proficient against the blitz. In fact, he's thrown for 32 first downs, and has accounted for zero giveaways when blitzed in 2026.

Flores, for one, is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead with facing Goff and the Lions’ potent passing game.

“Statistically, he’s been one of the best quarterbacks, not even statistically, period. He’s been one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League over a good amount of time,” the Minnesota defensive coordinator said of Goff. “And so, yes, he’s grown quite a bit. And that’s what you expect as guys get more time on their belt, see more coverages, see more fronts, see more blitzes. He’s seen all the blitzes. He’s seen them all.

“And so he’s really, I think he’s one of the best in the league. And they’ve got a great skill group, and he knows how to distribute the ball to all of them. And this is a major challenge, (which) certainly (kept) me up (the) last couple nights.”

At this present juncture, I'm willing to predict that St. Brown and Williams both end up with five catches and combine for 125 yards and a score in Sunday's pivotal divisional tilt.
