Manchester United have reportedly decided against sacking Michael Carrick, with the club set to give the 45-year-old a chance to improve their fortunes.
Article continues under the videoThe Red Devils are without a win in their last eight matches across all competitions and they are currently languishing down in 16th place in the Premier League table, with just one win in their opening seven English top flight fixtures this term.
Carrick was expected to be fired following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, with Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Unai Emery identified as the leading four contenders to replace him in the Old Trafford dugout.
However, the Man Utd hierarchy have opted against sacking their former player.
That is according to The Overlap reporter Mike Keegan, who posted on X: “Understand Michael Carrick will be given the opportunity to turn things around at Manchester United.”
This has been confirmed by The Athletic and BBC Sport, with Carrick's job safe for now.
Man Utd travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their next fixture on Saturday afternoon, before hosting AS Roma in the Champions League next Tuesday. They will then play Aston Villa in their final match before the November international break.
It’s understood that Man Utd chiefs Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox held talks over Carrick’s future at the club on Monday and, following those discussions, the Englishman will be given the chance to end the club’s winless run against Chelsea.
When asked if he expected to be sacked after the loss to Bournemouth, Carrick told reporters: “I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal.
“I love this place. I’ll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really, so that’s kind of it. You know, I’m not expecting anything either way.
“I take the responsibility - I’ve said that, I accept the responsibility,” he added.
“Whatever is going to happen results-wise – whether we win, we lose, draw. Whatever happens through the whole football club, I’m in this position because I respect the position that I’m in, and the responsibility is mine. What else can I say really right now?”
