A Tartan Army footsoldier who shot to fame during the World Cup has been jailed after leaving a man with a fractured skull in a brutal street attack.
Tommy Morrison became an online sensation when his whirlwind romance with American mum Jill Roberts went viral after the pair met in Boston during the summer tournament. However, the Bonnyrigg joiner's fairy-tale romance with the 42-year-old was short-lived, after Jill ended their relationship over what she described as "unresolved" matters from his past.
The Record reported that the 38-year-old appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, October 1, where he pled guilty to assault to severe injury and serious impairment in connection with the vicious attack on Ryan Wain. The charge had initially been brought as attempted murder before being reduced.
Morrison appeared at the same court on Friday, October 30, where he was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
The Hibs fan, who had been released on bail ahead of sentencing, was also given a lifelong non-harassment order banning him from contacting his victim.

His defence lawyer Emma Merton told the court: "He has a 16-year-old son, and is a joiner with his own business.
"He has taken full responsibility for his actions and has not tried to minimise them in anyway.
"He has shown sympathy and understands how his actions have affected the complainer."
"He accepts that he should never got involved."
"He is under no illusion that this is a very serious matter and wishes he could turn back the clock."
She asked the Sheriff not to give him a custodial sentence.
But Sheriff Christopher Dickson said Mr Wain had suffered a fractured skull and has suffered hearing loss since the attack.
Sentencing him to 14 months, reduced from 21, he said: "This was an appalling attack on the complainer.
"You pulled him to the ground and he lost consciousness. You repeatedly kicked the defenceless comolainer and continued to do so despite attempts to stop you.
"Given the seriousness of the offence and your previous convictions, a custodial sentence is only suitable."
The court heard how Wain had been enjoying a pub crawl with a woman, Ms McClure, on the night of May 22, 2025.
The pair had visited the Calderwood Inn and the Anvil Inn in Bonnyrigg when they crossed paths with Morrison. Witnesses described the couple as loud and believed they had been arguing.
Morrison allegedly shouted "woman beater" at Wain before grabbing him by his clothes and hauling him to the ground. Wain's head smashed against the concrete, leaving him unconscious as the violence escalated.
The court heard Morrison unleashed a series of punches to his victim's head and stomach while he lay on the floor. Ms McClure desperately pleaded with Morrison to stop and attempted to pull him away but she was unable to overpower him as he continued his assault.
Morrison carried on punching and kicking Wain while he lay unconscious before fleeing towards the Anvil Inn. When police arrived, they found Wain lying on the pavement and partially on the road.

He was drifting in and out of consciousness, with swelling on his skull and blood pouring from his mouth and ear. He was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where doctors diagnosed a frontal skull fracture.
The injuries left him suffering from hearing loss and an impaired sense of smell and taste. Morrison handed himself in to police three weeks after the attack.
Morrison became known online as 'Tartan Army Tommy' after his chance encounter with 'Boston Jill' in June captured the imagination of football fans on both sides of the Atlantic.
Jill had travelled to watch the Boston Red Sox during Pride Night, unaware that thousands of Scotland supporters would also descend on the famous ballpark for the game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
On her way home, she bumped into Morrison, who was heading towards the train station. The pair struck up a brief conversation, with Jill recording their meeting on her phone.
The clip quickly attracted thousands of views on social media, sparking a search for the mystery Scotsman. Jill later admitted regretting the missed not exchanging numbers but they were eventually brought together again when one of Morrison's former girlfriends passed on his details.
The pair began exchanging messages on WhatsApp, with Jill describing the romance as an unexpected gift from Scotland's World Cup adventure. Their relationship developed to the point that Jill booked flights to Scotland for a special reunion.
However, by August, the romance was over. The Record previously revealed that Morrison had appeared in court in January this year on charges of offences under Solemn Procedure, which are usually dealt with by a trial before a judge and a jury of 15 people.
In an emotional video shared with followers, Jill opened up about the decision to walk away from the relationship.
She said: “Where do things stand with me and Tommy? I’ve let him know that it’s over for me based on some things that happened.
"He has some unresolved connections with the past that he needs to resolve or pursue."

Despite the split, fans continued to urge Jill to go ahead with her planned Scottish adventure and last month, she arrived in the country for a week-long trip that took her from Edinburgh to Crieff and Glasgow. During her visit, she met scores of online supporters and even watched Celtic thrash Aberdeen at Parkhead.
Since their break-up, Tommy has reportedly shacked up with a new flame. He posted a snap with a mystery woman which prompted dozens of comments.
William McLardie joked: “Much nicer than that American burd.” Scott Sutherland added: “Onwards and upwards Tommy lad, we all make mistakes and none of us are perfect.”
