Brentford not backed for Brighton win despite Forest victory

The win over Oliver Glasner's side was Brentford's first after a four game winless run in all competitions. On Sunday, they head to the south coast to face a Brighton side brimming with confidence, having won 1-0 away at Manchester City last Saturday.

The two sides are only separated by three places and five points, but the Seagulls have put many to the sword on home soil.

Aston Villa were dismantled on the opening weekend, Arsenal were outplayed and local rivals Crystal Palace were simply destroyed in a 5-0 rout.

Brentford will be aware of that and their own record against the Seagulls, having lost twice to them last season which brutally saw them miss out on Europe on goal difference.

They will be desperate to exert revenge on their hosts, but that will not be easy given Brighton have yet to lose at the Amex this season.

In contrast, Brentford have yet to lose on the road in the Premier League. However, they have drawn all five of their away games.

That said, that doesn't detract from the fact Brighton are outright favourites to win the game. However, history has shown that Brentford usually tend to triumph when their opponents are overwhelming favourites or in control of their own destiny.

Towards the end of Thomas Frank's reign, Brentford faced Champions League contending Nottingham Forest, who had won four of their previous six league games and a win would have sent the East Midlands side third.

Brentford had an outside chance of European qualification. Goals from Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa in a 2-0 win had supporters daring to dream. However, Crystal Palace winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City put an end to that just over a fortnight later.

To use a recent example, no look further than Brentford's 1-0 win away at Aston Villa back in February. Villa were considered as outside title challengers to Arsenal and City, and a win would have sent Unai Emery's side second and four points off Arsenal.

Not only were Brentford reduced to 10-men, they took the lead through Dango Ouattara not long after Kevin Schade was sent off. Despite playing 55 minutes in the second-half with an extra man, Villa couldn't break down a Brentford team who had nothing to lose.

That is not to instantly assume they will triumph against Fabian Hürzeler's side on Sunday. They will still need to bring their A-game and perform a lot better than they have in recent weeks.

If Brentford want to go one step further, putting in a strong performance and getting a result against a side who have triumphed over many of the big sides, will go a long way to doing that.
