Aiden Markram wants to help South Africa reach the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final for the second time in a row after their historic title win in 2025. South Africa had defeated Australia by five wickets in the WTC Final at Lord’s in June 2025 by successfully chasing a target of 282 runs.

Markram played a brilliant knock of 136 runs to guide South Africa to their maiden WTC title under Temba Bavuma’s captaincy. Now, they have a great chance to win a historic double in 2027. Amid this, Nic Maddinson sent home after poor run as Australia set to make changes for Cape Town Test.

Extra fire and desire: Aiden Markram reveals South Africa’s big WTC Final goal

Ahead of the third and final Test against Australia in Cape Town, Aiden Markram has made it clear that South Africa wants to win the WTC title again at The Oval next year. He believes that the Proteas team has a strong chance of reaching the 2027 final, but the journey will not be easy.

South Africa has eight tests left in the current WTC 2025-27 cycle- one against Australia, two against Bangladesh, and three against England at home, followed by two tests in Sri Lanka. To have a strong chance of reaching the WTC Final 2027, they need to win at least five matches.

With tough challenges ahead, Markram stressed that the Proteas are eager to prove themselves once again on the world stage after winning the second Test against Australia.

Aiden Markram was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, "I believe we can make the final again. A lot was said last year about us making the final and the road to it, so now there's an extra fire and desire to get into the final, because we would have had to do it the extremely hard way. To go to Pakistan and India [in 2025], and with this home summer being huge against some quality opposition, there's a strong will to want to get in that final again, and it's a long way away.”

Markram says South Africa eye historic double in 2027

South Africa is also looking forward to the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, which will be held at home in October and November, and Markram said that this is another big opportunity for his team to achieve something rare in 2027.

The Proteas batter further added, “The home [ODI] World Cup [in October-November 2027] is huge as well for us. We want to try to do something special there.” Amid this, Cheteshwar Pujara picks 6 Indians in ODI World XI, leaves out Australia and Pakistan stars.

Aiden Markram reveals selfless mindset ahead of South Africa’s WTC Final push

Meanwhile, Aiden Markram has stressed that personal records and batting averages are no longer his main focus as he wants to contribute to team victories and help South Africa win more trophies. The experienced batter said, “There's no better feeling than winning, whether it's a final or just a normal game. That's sort of where I feel like I'm at.”

Markram signed off by saying, “I don't have a drive to try and average 45 at the end of my career. If it happens, it's going to happen on the back of this more recent approach. If it doesn't happen, I'm in complete peace with it. I just really hope along the way we can win more trophies, and if you can contribute towards that, then that's incredible.”
