Rangers Week Ahead: Trying to keep season from slipping away early

It’s only the first week of November, but the New York Rangers are already in danger of seeing their season slip away.

The Rangers enter the new week mired in a four-game losing streak after home losses to the Los Angeles Kings (6-3) last Monday and to the Edmonton Oilers (4-1) on Sunday after a five-day break in their schedule.

They didn’t hold a lead in either of the two games; in fact, they allowed the opening goal 1:15 into the loss to the Kings and 50 seconds after the opening face-off in the loss to the Oilers. New York hasn’t led in a game since early in the second period of its 5-4 loss in Toronto on Oct. 22, and that was for all of 90 seconds before the Maple Leafs tied the game at 3-3.

The four-game losing streak is part of a 1-5-1 slide that’s dropped them to 7-7-1, fifth in the Metropolitan Division and 13th in the Eastern Conference entering a three-game week that begins with home games against the St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers before they start their first major road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon against the Kraken in Seattle.

Given that the Rangers are just 1-5-1 away from Madison Square Garden, they need a quick rebound. A couple more bad weeks could leave them staring at a repeat of last season’s horror show (last in the Eastern Conference, 30th in the overall standings) before the schedule reaches Thanksgiving.

Who’s Hot?

Pavel Dorofeyev netted the Rangers’ lone goal Sunday and scored in two of his past three games. He enters the week with a five-game point streak.

Who’s Not?

Remember Dylan Garand’s hot start? It’s an increasingly distant memory. He took the loss against the Kings after James Reimer was lifted following the first period, then allowed three goals before the halfway point of the loss to the Oilers. The 24-year-old rookie has lost four straight starts, dropping him to 4-6-1. HIs save percentage slipped to .897 in 11 appearances this season.

Rangers lookahead this week includes …

The second half of a four-game homestand, followed by the start of the season’s first lengthy road trip.

St. Louis Blues at Rangers (Nov. 2, 7 p.m.; MSG)

Playing the Blues was one of the few things that went right for the Rangers last season. They swept the two-game season series, including a 3-2 win at the Garden on Nov. 24.

The Blueshirts and Blues split their past 10 meetings, but New York is 86-50-3 with 16 ties all-time against St. Louis. That includes 52-16-1 with six ties at the Garden, including four wins in the past five meetings.

J.T. Miller, who scored the OT winner in the Blueshirts’ 2-1 win at St. Louis last Dec. 18, has eight goals and 19 points in 21 career games against the Blues. That’s also a game Gabe Perreault will never forget – it’s when he scored his first NHL goal. Will Cuylle, who assisted on Perreault’s goal, has three goals and five points in six games. Dorofeyev had five goals and nine points in nine games against the Blues when he played for the Vegas Golden Knights.

Philadelphia Flyers at Rangers (Nov. 4, 7 p.m.; MSG)

The first month of the new season has been a nightmare for the Flyers, who surprised a lot of hockey people by making the Stanley Cup Playoffs and winning a round last spring. They began the season by losing 7-0 at home to the Pittsburgh Penguins and finished the season’s first month at 3-8-4, the worst mark in the Eastern Conference – although they started November with a 6-3 home win over the Utah Mammoth.

The Rangers were 2-1-1 against their Metropolitan Division rival last season, scoring 19 goals in the four games. New York has 11 wins in its past 15 games against Philadelphia since the start of the 2022-23 season.

Mika Zibanejad has more goals (25) and points (50) against the Flyers than against any other opponent. That includes two goals in their most recent meeting, a 6-2 Rangers win in Philadelphia on March 9. This could be a spot for coach Mike Sullivan to start Reimer; he’s 11-4-3 lifetime against Philadelphia with a 2.50 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. That is unless Joonas Korpisalo already returned from his foot infection and Reimer’s back in the minors, a distinct possibility considering Korpisalo’s recent ramp up at practice.

The Rangers open their four-game swing through the Northwest hoping to continue their success at Climate Pledge Arena. New York is 4-0-1 in Seattle, including a 3-2 overtime win last Nov. 1. Overall, the Rangers are 7-2-1 against the League’s newest team, and they’ve outscored the Kraken 35-25 in those 10 games.

Kaapo Kaako, the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft who was traded to the Kraken in December 2024, is largely the same player in Seattle that he was in New York – a useful middle-six forward who’s not the star the Rangers hoped he’d be. He finished October with two goals and 11 points in 14 games – tied for second on the Kraken — while averaging 14:18 of ice time.

Kakko had an assist in the teams’ last meeting on Jan. 12 at Madison Square Garden, when the Kraken overcame an early two-goal deficit to win 4-2. Eeli Tolvanen, signed by the Rangers as a free agent in September, scored Seattle’s first goal in that comeback victory.

Seattle was 8-5-1 in October despite scoring and allowing 52 goals. The Kraken, who traded young center Shane Wright to the Nashville Predators on Sunday, have been helped by winning both of their shootouts and edging Toronto 5-4 on Oct. 28 in a game that saw them allow the game-tying goal with 1:30 left in regulation but score the game-winner with 33 seconds to play.
