Manchester United’s managerial situation has become increasingly difficult to ignore.
The pressure on Michael Carrick had been building for several weeks, with supporters growing frustrated by the team’s performances and results.
Back-to-back defeats against Como and Bournemouth intensified the scrutiny, before another disappointing afternoon at Chelsea extended their winless run.
The club’s hierarchy, including Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, have consequently had to consider what direction to take if results fail to improve.
However, United’s remarkable Champions League comeback against Roma has provided Carrick with some temporary relief.
The 3-2 victory at Old Trafford, secured after falling two goals behind, could prove an important turning point if the players can carry that performance into domestic football.
Nevertheless, according to Foot Mercato, Manchester United have already made contact with former France manager Didier Deschamps as INEOS explore potential replacements should they decide to part ways with Carrick.
Didier Deschamps is an experienced manager whose achievements at international and club level make him an interesting name for United.
The 57-year-old spent 14 years managing France, having been appointed in July 2012 following Laurent Blanc’s departure.
His greatest achievement came at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he guided France to their second-ever world title after defeating Croatia 4-2 in the final.
He also reached the Euro 2016 final on home soil, losing to Portugal, before winning the Nations League in 2021.
France subsequently finished runners-up at the 2022 World Cup after losing to Argentina on penalties.
His final tournament was the 2026 World Cup, where France reached the semi-finals before losing 2-0 to Spain.
They subsequently finished fourth following a 6-4 defeat against England in the bronze-medal match.
Deschamps also has considerable club experience, having managed Monaco, Juventus and Marseille.
He guided Monaco to the 2004 Champions League final, won Serie B with Juventus in 2007 and secured the Ligue 1 title with Marseille in 2010.
However, Foot Mercato report that Deschamps is not particularly interested in replacing Carrick and would prefer to take his time before accepting another managerial position.
Deschamps is reportedly not the only manager United have explored as a possible alternative.
Foot Mercato also claim that informal contact has been made with Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery.
Nagelsmann became available after leaving his position as Germany head coach following the 2026 World Cup.
The 39-year-old previously managed Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, winning the Bundesliga with Bayern in 2022.
Emery, meanwhile, presents a different situation.
The Spaniard has transformed Aston Villa since arriving in October 2022, leading them into the Champions League and winning the Europa League last season.
However, Villa have now announced their commitment to continuing the project with Emery beyond 2029, making a potential departure considerably more complicated.
For now, Carrick remains in charge and has an immediate opportunity to improve his position.
United welcome Emery’s Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Sunday, in their final fixture before the November international break.
Another convincing performance could help ease the pressure surrounding the 45-year-old.
