Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his fifth tour-level final of the season at the Vienna Open after defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Saturday.

Having not conceded a set at the ATP 500 tournament yet, Alcaraz continued his flawless run against Medvedev, beating the Russian 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) to reach the championship match. The 23-year-old Spaniard has now reached five finals every year for five consecutive seasons, and will be bidding to clinch his 28th ATP crown in Vienna.

Carlos Alcaraz speaks after beating Daniil Medvedev in Vienna

Alcaraz’s victory over Medvedev marked his 31st top-five win, and first since his return from the wrist injury that kept him sidelined for over four months. He also snapped Medvedev’s seven-match win streak on the ATP Tour, with the former US Open champion having won the Almaty Open last week

“Well, yeah, it’s a great feeling,” said Alcaraz, speaking in his on-court interview. “Beating someone like Daniil on an indoor court after the run he was having, you know, a lot of wins in a row, a lot of confidence, and I was able to beat him. It’s special.

“I’ve been working really hard in every aspect of my game to try to be in good shape for this tournament, try to give myself another chance to go far in the tournament. So, I’m just really, really happy to be able to play another final, first one here in Vienna, and I will try to make the most of the time to be in good shape, to recover well, to be properly physically and mentally ready for tomorrow.

“But, you know, it’s been a great week, and I’m looking forward to playing tomorrow.” Alcaraz’s only prior campaign at the Vienna Open came at the 2022 edition of the event, where he reached the semifinals before losing to Alexander Zverev.

Carlos Alcaraz back to winning ways against Daniil Medvedev

Alcaraz earned his first win against Medvedev in over two years with the triumph in Vienna, months after losing to him in Indian Wells. In the semifinals of the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season, Medvedev defeated Alcaraz for the third time in his career.

Medvedev’s victory in ‘Tennis Paradise’ was his first in their head-to-head since the 2023 US Open semifinals. Alcaraz had gone on a four-match win streak against the former ATP number one, beating him at the 2023 ATP Finals, and in Indian Wells, Wimbledon and Beijing in 2024.

Medvedev’s only other victory over Alcaraz came in their first career meeting at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, where he overcame the then-teenager in straight sets.
