Falmouth Ladies meet England football pioneer Pat Firth

On Tuesday October 20, Falmouth Ladies Football Club were incredibly fortunate to enjoy a very special private meet and greet with Pat Firth, one of the original Lionesses and a true pioneer of women’s football.

Pat holds a very special place in the history of the England women’s game, having been the 16th player to represent the Lionesses.

She also made history by becoming the first player ever to score a true hat-trick – one goal with her left foot, one with her right foot and one with her head!

Pat spent an inspiring hour with the team, taking us through her remarkable journey, from where it all began to where she is today.

She shared fascinating stories from her playing days, her experiences of representing England and even gave us an insight into meeting the current Lionesses on several occasions, telling us what they are really like.

The connection came about after Yaina Andrew, Falmouth Ladies’ Chair and Captain, and Frances Geall, club Treasurer and player, first met Pat at the Cornwall FA Awards evening.

Yaina was nominated for the Lioness of the Year award, which Pat was presenting.

Following that meeting, we were delighted to welcome Pat to Falmouth Football Club to spend time with the whole team.

Pat very kindly brought along a wonderful collection of memorabilia, including photographs, caps and newspaper cuttings from throughout her footballing career.

It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to see and hear first-hand what life was like for one of the women who helped pave the way for the game we love today.

The evening finished with a lively question-and-answer session, giving players the chance to ask Pat about her experiences, followed by photographs and plenty more conversation.

What made the evening even more special was Pat’s offer to come along and watch some of our matches, showing her support for the club.

She also shared some fantastic advice and words of encouragement for the team as we look ahead to the future.

For Falmouth Ladies, meeting someone who has been such an important part of women’s football history was a real privilege.

Pat is a true legend – an original Lioness who has helped shape the opportunities that today’s players can enjoy.

We cannot thank Pat enough for giving up her time, sharing her stories and making the whole team feel so welcome.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and we very much look forward to welcoming her back to Bickland for one of our next home fixtures.

Thank you, Pat. It was an absolute pleasure!
