SECOND half goals from Matt Gilmour and Dan Hocking ensured the Camels returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 success at bottom side Wendron United.
Camelford were beaten 4-1 by fellow high-flyers Callington Town in their previous outing, and boss Bobby Hopkinson gave a first start to the season in midfield to youngster Jacob Turner having returned to full fitness. Skipper Tom Crowe was also absent, as was winger Liam Higgins due to injury, while midfielder Kenley Dyson has joined Western League Premier Division outfit Tavistock.
Camelford dominated most of the first half with right-sided attacker Kyle Flew the main beneficiary of three big chances which were either missed or saved by Ethan Fearn.
Wendron’s youngsters were tidy on the ball but found it hard to make much headway bar a chance soon after the break which was fired wide, and the Camels took the lead on the hour as Gilmour, on in the first half due to Jacob Ham’s broken nose, fired in from 20 yards.
Within 10 minutes Camelford added a second. Winger Joe Parr ran at the defence, and although he was fouled, centre-half Dan Hocking picked up the loose ball before making no mistake from just outside of the box.
Assistant boss Matt Lloyd headed wide as the visitors, who visit Mousehole on Saturday (3pm) searched for a third, but they had to settle for what they had.
Player/manager Bobby Hopkinson hailed a solid day for his side, adding: “It was nice to return to winning ways and although 2-0 probably flattered them, we played some positive football and dominated large spells of the game.”
