Two Norfolk football clubs break league attendance record

AC Mill Lane and Shrublands FC, with the support of the AwayDays football YouTube channel, have broken the Anglian Combination leagues’ record attendance in their encounter at the Wellesley Stadium in Great Yarmouth.

A record-breaking 1,023 football fans came to watch the two sides face off with Shrublands FC securing a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

The match also came as part of a double-header with Great Yarmouth Town FC and Stowmarket Town FC producing a goalless draw in the earlier clash.

In a post on Facebook, AC Mill Lane said: “We faced Shrublands in what was a brilliant day for non-league football, in front of a record-breaking 1023 spectators at the Wellesley.

“Disappointing the way the weather went on the day, having a big impact on both the football itself and the numbers in attendance.

“Despite all this we still managed to make history, a massive thank you goes out to the 1023 in attendance on the day in that weather.

“Finally, a huge thank you to AwayDays for organising the event and Great Yarmouth Town FC for their hospitality. Truly a day we will never forget.”

Posting on social media, Great Yarmouth Town FC said: “A combative game from both sides in tough conditions with a point probably the fair result.

“1023 in the crowd for a feast of football. Rutherford man of the match.

The money raised from the day will go towards Great Yarmouth Town FC and AC Mill Lane.

In a video online, Ellis Platten – from the AwayDays YouTube channel and who is originally from Great Yarmouth – said: “Thank you so much for what was a ridiculous, record-breaking, mind-blowing day.

“We had over 1000 people turn up to watch an amateur team play football which is just absolutely ridiculous.

“That money is going to help the clubs massively.

“A massive shout-out to everyone involved at Great Yarmouth and Mill Lane for making it possible.

“It was a really special day and one that is impossible for me to ever forget.”
