After three victories in their last four matches, Bristol Bears were defeated 22-16 by Leicester Tigers at Ashton Gate on Friday night, missing the opportunity to go to the top of the Gallagher PREM table.

Despite only scoring the one try to Tigers’ four, Bears earned the majority of their points through the boot of James Williams, who converted their only try, which was superbly scored by Louis Rees-Zammit, and a further three penalties.

Freddie Steward, Adam Radwan, Ollie Hassell-Collins and Jamie Blamire were all on top form for the Tigers as their tries sent them back to Leicester with a bonus point victory and at the top of the league ahead of Gloucester’s match against Northampton Saints at Franklins Gardens.

Rugby writer Harry Ellard gives his thoughts on the Bears players

A – 15 – Tom Jordan – 4/10

Had a difficult evening, spending time in the sin-bin for a high tackle and made a costly handling error late on when Bears were chasing the game.

B – 14 – Louis Rees-Zammit – 8/10

Standout player for Bears, not only in defence but also scored a fantastic 45-metre solo try with superb footwork to sweep past five Tigers’ players and score the opening try of the game.

C – 13 – Matias Moroni – 5/10

Had a strong game, defended aggressively with plenty of physicality but a high tackle on Solomone Kata towards the end of the first half left Bristol under serious pressure.

D – 12 – James Williams – 7/10

Converted four out of four of his kicks from the tee, three of which were penalties, which resulted keeping the Bears in the contest.

E – 11 – Gabriel Ibitoye – 6/10

Offered a lot of attacking threat from the wing but was left frustrated after a few costly errors went the wrong way for Bears.

F – 10 – AJ MacGinty – 6/10

Brilliant in attacking, multiple line breaks, key in attack and defence, including a few clever carries in second half, but was forced to work very hard to get Bristol’s attacking game working against a well-organised Tigers side.

G – 9 – Harry Randall – 6/10

Coped well under early pressure, and tried to play quick through the lines, but found it difficult when trying to inject tempo into Bears’ attack and create promising opportunities.

H – 1 – Ellis Genge – 6/10

Very strong in the front row, won a crucial penalty to stop certain Tigers try. The loose-head also made strong carries in the second half and put in a powerful performance in the scrum.
