Barcelona attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez has reportedly decided whether he will sign for Manchester United.
Lopez was first linked with a potential move to Old Trafford on Friday (October 30), with journalist Matteo Moretto claiming the Spain international could effectively be Bruno Fernandes’ replacement at United, with the Portuguese midfielder out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
Moretto claimed United had enquired about both Fermin and Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios, while stating that talks were at the enquiry stage rather than the clubs negotiating a deal directly.
Lopez would no doubt be a positive attacking addition to Michael Carrick’s side, with his versatility and ability to play across the front line a huge asset, alongside his experience at the highest level. He has already won two La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey with the Catalans, as well as Euro 2024 with the Spanish national team.
It has been widely reported that Barca, who currently lead La Liga, would seek a fee of around £84 million for the 23-year-old. Lopez, who has contributed 37 goals and 32 assists in 148 matches, is under contract at Camp Nou until 2031.
As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano on Saturday (October 31), it appears the player does not want to join United at this time, despite the speculation over the past two days.
Speaking in a video posted to X, Romano explained: “Despite reports over recent days, Fermin Lopez is absolutely untouchable for Barcelona.
“So all the stories regarding a potential Premier League switch for Fermin Lopez are being played down by Barca and also those close to the player.
“Fermin is very happy at Barcelona. He signed a new deal at the club a few months ago. He’s a completely crucial player for Barcelona, so it’s not about the money.
“Fermin Lopez is considered by Barca and especially the director Deco as a crucial player for the present and future.
“Fermin is also very happy at Barcelona, so the connection is fantastic. There is no change or Premier League switch planned.
“So everything is under control. Fermin Lopez is 100 per cent staying at Barcelona.”
Despite the setback, United remain keen on signing a new striker this January, with Benjamin Sesko sidelined with a shin injury.
Leeds United forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin is thought to be attracting attention from suitors at Old Trafford, although the Yorkshire side intend to tie him down to a new contract.
United have also been linked with Club Brugge’s Nicolo Tresoldi, Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic and Dion Beljo, the 24-year-old striker from Dinamo Zagreb.
