Ivan Toney is going viral for 'strange' new penalty technique that completely fooled the goalkeeper

Ivan Toney has got people talking after he used an unconventional, yet effective, penalty technique during Al Ahli's victory over Al Khaleej.

The 30-year-old former Brentford striker, who has netted 13 goals in nine Saudi Pro League games this season, netted a brace for Marino Pusic's side as they swept aside Al Khaleej in Jeddah.

It was a memorable evening for the England international. As well as scoring the opener, Toney converted from the spot in the final seconds of Friday's match to make it 4-1.

Previously, Toney has used a no-look penalty technique, where he stares directly at the goalkeeper instead of the ball throughout his run-up, but he switched things up on Friday night.

The forward stuck with his trademark short run-up but added an unexpected twist, catching goalkeeper Marwan Al-Haidari off guard by taking the penalty almost immediately after the referee's whistle.

After taking two steps back, he quickly rushed towards the ball and blasted it into the bottom left corner, leaving Al-Haidari helpless in the middle of the goal.

Fans were quick to comment on the moment, with one saying: "Ivan Toney with the strangest penalty kick technique I have ever seen."A second wrote: "Keeper must’ve been so sure of how he would do it and then..."

A third commented: "Ivan Toney with a penalty technique that takes everyone by surprise, even the camera man."

A fourth wrote: "He deserves to be in the conversation with the best penalty takers we've seen in world football. His technique is out of this world," and a fifth added: "The goalkeeper never saw it coming."

Ivan Toney has given his verdict on standard of Saudi Pro League

Last year, Toney gave his thoughts on the standard of the Saudi Pro League and where his club Al Ahli would finish if they played in the Premier League.

The striker, who joined Al Ahli in a £40 million move from Brentford in the summer of 2024, claimed his side would challenge for the top four if they competed in England's top tier.

"Ronaldo has been around the world and probably knows a lot more than me as I have only played in the Premier League, the Championship and Leagues One and Two," Toney told The Guardian.

"For me, [the Pro League] is on a par with the Premier League. If [Al Ahli] were in the Premier League, we’d give it a good go and we'd be close to the top four."

He added: "It is a quality league and people should not turn their noses up. We saw Al Hilal play against Man City and beat them."
