Chelsea may have given up on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall too soon after ‘outstanding’ Everton display

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has reminded Chelsea what they let go after producing another superb performance for Everton. The midfielder was instrumental in the Toffees’ 1-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday night, earning the Player of the Match award.

Dewsbury-Hall has become a key figure at Everton since leaving Stamford Bridge, where he struggled to secure regular minutes. The 28-year-old’s latest display has renewed the debate over whether the Blues gave up on him too soon.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall shows Chelsea what they are missing

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was at the heart of Everton’s win over Newcastle, producing the decisive moment with an excellent through ball to former Chelsea academy graduate Tyrique George. George’s shot went past Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek before Thierno Barry followed up to tap home the winner.

Dewsbury-Hall recorded a team-high 77 touches and created three key passes, while also making three tackles, joint-most alongside James Garner. He earned a 7.73 rating from WhoScored and was deservedly named man of the match.

His performance earned plenty of praise, including from ESPN commentator Ian Darke, who questioned why Chelsea had not made better use of him. Darke wrote: “Nearly every time I see Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, I wonder how Chelsea failed to use him much at all in the Premier League. Everton’s gain. Can’t be far off the England squad.”

Everton supporters were equally impressed, with one writing: “Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with the best midfield performance I’ve seen for a long time in an Everton shirt.” Another went even further, comparing him favourably with several England midfielders: “People go on about [Elliot] Anderson, [Declan] Rice, [Alex] Scott, [Adam] Wharton! Personally think Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is better than them all! Honestly don’t get why no one is talking about him and how could Chelsea have done with him now he’d walk into that midfield.”

Other fans were equally complimentary, with one simply describing him as “outstanding”. Another wrote: “He’s had his fair share of brilliance since signing last August but that tonight was up there with the best I’ve ever seen him play. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, take a bow.”

Dewsbury-Hall’s latest display is part of an impressive run of form at Everton, where he has become one of David Moyes’ key players. Suggestions that he deserves an England call-up in November are even beginning to gain traction.

Why Chelsea could have used Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this season

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s performances at Leicester showed exactly why Enzo Maresca wanted to bring him to Chelsea in the summer of 2024. He scored 12 goals and provided 14 assists during the Foxes’ Championship-winning campaign.

However, he struggled to reproduce that form in West London and never became a regular Premier League starter. The Englishman still contributed to Chelsea’s Conference League success, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 12 appearances, but made just two Premier League starts.

Chelsea eventually sold him to Everton, where he is now showing the consistency he struggled to achieve at Stamford Bridge. While he was unlikely to displace Moises Caicedo as a first-choice midfielder, Dewsbury-Hall offered more than enough to be a valuable squad player.

That is particularly relevant given the availability concerns surrounding several of Chelsea’s midfield options. Romeo Lavia and Reece James have both had recurring injury problems, Jordan Henderson is an experienced veteran and new arrival Valentin Barco is still adjusting to English football.

In that context, Dewsbury-Hall could have offered Chelsea another reliable midfield option this season. Instead, Everton are benefiting from a player thriving with regular minutes, while his performances suggest the Blues may have given up on him too soon.
