‘Better Teacher Than the Coach’ – Ex-NFL LB Makes Strong Case for Veteran QBs As Caleb Williams Benefits From Case Keenum’s Guidance

Case Keenum didn’t play in the Chicago Bears’ Week 7 matchup against the New England Patriots, serving as the emergency third-string quarterback behind Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent. But a mic’d-up moment showed how valuable he was from the sideline.

The veteran backup spotted a weakness in New England’s defense and relayed it to Williams, who took advantage. The exchange caught Emmanuel Acho’s attention, and he used it to explain why veteran backups can be so important to a team.

Emmanuel Acho Explains the Value of Case Keenum’s Guidance

The mic’d-up footage showed Keenum telling Williams that New England was struggling to adjust to Chicago’s pre-snap movement.

“They’re slow in setting our shifts and motion. They’re struggling to pass all that stuff off,” Keenum said.

Williams then returned to the field, found Luther Burden over the middle from a clean pocket and completed a pass into Patriots territory. Williams thanked Keenum afterward, making sure to acknowledge his help as they crossed paths on the sideline.

Acho quote-tweeted the clip, using Keenum’s contribution to explain why teams need experienced quarterbacks behind their starters.

“People clown back-up quarterbacks because they ‘weren’t good enough to get on the field.’ The truth is: the backup QB is often a better teacher than the coach because he can see it and can communicate it in a way that’s well received,”Acho wrote.

Keenum has contributed more than sideline advice this season.

With Williams sidelined by a hamstring injury and Bagent working through concussion protocol, Keenum started against the Philadelphia Eagles and helped Chicago win 27-7. He threw for 247 yards and accounted for three touchdowns.

His preparation has also earned praise from his teammates. In October, Bagent described taking notes on Keenum’s approach throughout the week, including how he handled meetings.

Keenum has also described the group’s film study and preparation as a shared effort. That support has helped Williams as he continues to develop under Ben Johnson. The starter had already received praise from Russell Wilson for his accuracy, quick release, and ability to create outside the pocket.

Against New England in Week 8, Williams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Chicago won 30-24 to improve to 5-2.

Williams currently ranks No. 6 in the league with a PFN QB Impact Score of 83.8 through four appearances. He has thrown for 1,020 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.
