I just had a look at the Premier League table and was thinking about Newcastle United.
I know it is Halloween but…
Is this really as scary as some Newcastle United fans are making it out to be?
Is it really justified or has mass hysteria taken over a sizeable part of the Newcastle United fanbase?
This season was never going to be straightforward for NUFC, what happened in the summer ensured that.
So much upheaval on and off the pitch, a change of manager and a serious realignment of the Newcastle United squad.
Key players leaving to satisfy the UEFA SCR restrictions, the club having to bring in some serious money and get the wage bill down. Recruitment was focused on less expensive lower wage inexperienced young players from weaker overseas leagues.
Surely no one thought that, at least on paper, this would equal a stronger first team for the 2026-27 season, not even one on the same level.
I see and hear so much negativity but I look at the Premier League table and it shows Newcastle United eighth with 11 points from the opening eight league games.
A win at home on Monday night would give Newcastle United 14 points from nine games. If that average points per game was continued over the rest of the season it would give NUFC 59 points. That would have been enough for top six in the Premier League table last season, Liverpool qualified for the Champions League on 60 points to get fifth.
A win for Newcastle against Everton would guarantee a place in the top six after this weekend if today Leeds fail to beat Bournemouth and Brentford don’t beat Forest. Whilst if Chelsea lost to Man U as well, Matthias Jaissle and his Newcastle United players would end up fifth in the Premier League table come the end of Monday.
It is not a case of pretending everything is great at St James’ Park but surely we have to keep things in some kind of perspective?
Premier League table on the morning of Saturday 31 October 2026
Here’s hoping the Premier League table looks even better come close of play on Monday.
