Marc Marquez has gained an opportunity in the 2026 MotoGP title battle after Jorge Martin withdrew from the Malaysian Grand Prix with a severe wrist injury. Martin broke his wrist at the Australian Grand Prix six days earlier and made a courageous but ultimately futile attempt to compete at Sepang.

The injury forced him to pull out after Free Practice 2 on Saturday morning. Aprilia officially confirmed his exit as the qualifying sessions were underway.
Marquez secured second position on the grid behind pole-sitter Alex Marquez in Q2. He acknowledged Martin’s valiant effort but recognised the toll the injury took.
Speaking to TNT Sports inside Parc Ferme, the reigning world champion said, “Of course, he was trying something very difficult, but yeah, in the end, his stop means that he has a lot of pain because Jorge is a very strong rider.” He added, “We wish him a good recovery and rehabilitation.”
This is a boost to Marquez’s championship campaign, especially after he wrestled back control of the riders’ championship during last weekend’s Sprint race at Phillip Island, the same event where Martin sustained his potentially season-ending injury. With Martin sidelined for the remainder of the Malaysian weekend, Marquez faces reduced pressure to secure maximum points.
Marco Bezzecchi remains a contender, trailing Marquez by 50 points but still within striking distance for a maiden world title.
Marquez ensured no immediate threat from Bezzecchi in Sepang by tactically providing Pedro Acosta a slipstream during the final flying laps in Q2. That placed Acosta between himself and Bezzecchi, blocking any direct challenge into Turn 1.
Addressing the move, Marquez remarked, “It’s normal. Next year, I don’t think he will need the slipstream. When I was at Honda, I was even looking for a slipstream. Now, luckily, I’m riding in a good way, and I have a good bike.” Acosta, who is set to join Ducati next season alongside Marquez, lightheartedly joked he owes the champion a dinner for the tow.
Despite this cooperation in qualifying, Acosta has already made it clear he won’t be aiding Marquez’s quest for an eighth MotoGP crown on track. He hinted at a potentially intense battle at Turn 1 during both the Sepang Sprint and the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Marquez’s poised reaction to Martin’s withdrawal, combined with his tactical approach in qualifying, underlines the intensity of the 2026 title fight as it heads deeper into the season.
