The South Carolina Gamecocks arrive in Norman on Saturday riding a two-game winning streak. The Oklahoma Sooners, meanwhile, are coming off a win but haven't won back-to-back games this season.
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is a former Sooner assistant and entered the season on the hot seat. The Gamecocks started the year 2-0, before losing three straight games. Many wondered if that marked the end of Beamer's time at South Carolina, but the Gamecocks beat the Florida Gators and Tennessee Volunteers, both ranked teams, which has renewed optimism for the program.
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables praised Beamer for the job the staff has done to turn them around.
"As hot a team in our conference right now as there is in South Carolina," Venables said. "Coach Beamer and their team, their staff have done a fantastic job."
South Carolina's recent surge makes Saturday's matchup a significant test for Oklahoma as the Sooners look to build consistency. Wins over Florida and Tennessee have given the Gamecocks momentum, and they'll carry that confidence to Norman. Oklahoma will need to match that intensity early, avoid giving South Carolina opportunities to seize control and take advantage of playing at home.
For the Sooners, the goal is to turn last week's win into the start of their own winning streak. At 4-3, Oklahoma can gain ground in the conference and build momentum heading into the rest of its schedule. Beamer's familiarity with the program adds another layer to the matchup, but Venables and his team will focus on execution. A complete performance on both sides of the ball could help Oklahoma secure a valuable SEC win and establish some much-needed consistency.
