£67m Spanish Winger On Arsenal Radar: Should Arteta Wait?

Arsenal transfer news: The Gunners have established themselves among Europe’s strongest sides under Mikel Arteta, winning the Premier League last season before finishing Champions League runners-up. That success has raised expectations, but maintaining their advantage requires careful recruitment alongside continued performances on the pitch.

The Gunners have started 2026/27 strongly, winning eight of their opening nine league matches and collecting 24 points with a +9 goal difference. Across 15 matches in all competitions, Arteta’s side have secured 12 victories, including a Community Shield win over Manchester City. Two wins and a draw in the Champions League league phase have strengthened their position further.

Sustaining that form across domestic and European competitions requires sufficient attacking depth, particularly after Leandro Trossard’s summer departure to Besiktas. Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge for £34 million, signing a contract until 2031, while Eberechi Eze remains another important creative option through his ability to operate centrally or from the left.

Both players offer Arteta flexibility, although the manager still wants sufficient quality across his attacking rotation for a demanding campaign. Arsenal’s recruitment team have therefore continued examining technically gifted forwards who could strengthen their frontline.

According to CaughtOffside, citing an exclusive TEAMtalk report, Arsenal are actively monitoring Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena. The 25-year-old Spaniard reportedly features prominently in their recruitment discussions, although Atletico remain reluctant to sanction a January departure.

Baena has recorded five goals and four assists across 14 appearances so far this season, taking his career contribution to 92 goals and assists in 253 matches. His ability to play on either flank, operate as an attacking midfielder or support a striker makes him particularly attractive to Arteta. Atletico reportedly value the midfielder at £67 million, while Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa have also monitored his situation.

Arsenal transfer news: Should Arsenal wait until summer 2027 for Baena?

Arsenal should resist forcing this transfer in January, even if Baena represents an excellent tactical match. His pressing, movement between positions and technical quality suit Arteta’s approach, while his creativity could improve Arsenal’s combinations against compact defences.

Nevertheless, paying £67 million midway through a title challenge would carry unnecessary financial and sporting risks. Atletico have little incentive to negotiate during the winter, particularly with Baena contracted until 2030. Arsenal would probably need an exceptional offer to change Diego Simeone’s position.

Viktor Gyokeres could become part of Arsenal’s summer financial planning, although the club reportedly prefer retaining the forward until then unless somebody meets his £55 million valuation. Selling him prematurely to finance Baena would disrupt Arteta’s attacking hierarchy and leave the recruitment team solving another problem.

Tzolis and Eze already provide sufficient left-sided coverage, giving Arsenal room to postpone their decision without weakening their immediate ambitions. A summer approach would allow the board and sporting director to assess their budget, negotiate more carefully and avoid paying a January premium.

Baena deserves serious consideration, but Arsenal don’t need to gamble their current momentum on Atletico’s terms.
