Arsenal may have narrowly beaten Hull City on Saturday to retain their place at the top of the Premier League but one of Mikel Arteta's players frustrated fans.
It looked to be a difficult afternoon for the Gunners after a lackluster first-half display certainly in attack, although they were controversially denied a penalty. A crucial winner arrived in the 72nd minute courtesy of Martin Odegaard, who pounced to poke the ball home from close range.
Arteta will be relieved to see his side come away with all three points against a Hull team that have been tricky opposition. He might not be best pleased with his attackers, and it begs to question whether the club should have recruited better in the summer.
Arsenal looked likely to sign a big-name attacker when they first set their sights on Morgan Rogers before baulking at Aston Villa's £117 million asking price. Chelsea pounced, taking the Englishman to Stamford Bridge where he's thrived.
Vinicius Junior had been next up on Arteta's wishlist but the Brazilian put pen to paper on a new deal with Real Madrid. Interest in Julian Alvarez also led to no bid because the Atletico Madrid forward made clear he wanted to join Barcelona.
Instead, Arteta came into the season with two new attacking signings, one of them being Christos Tzolis, who seemed destined to be a backup option. The Greek winger has benefited from a lack of a new world-class left-winger arriving at the Emirates, but he's yet to truly get going in North London.
Tzolis started in today's win over Hull, making his seventh league appearance but failing to truly influence proceedings on the left flank. Tasked with filling the void left by Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, he's managed just one top-flight assist and Arteta had seen enough by the 69th minute.
Eberechi Eze came on for the 24-year-old and looked more lively and eager to prove he should be starting ahead of his Greek teammate. He might have only cost £34m from Club Brugge, but there are question marks over the former Norwich City star.
Tzolis looks to have a fight on his hands to win Arsenal fans over after today's outing against Hull. Many of them have vented their frustrations with him and the decision to bring him to the Emirates. One fan wrote on X: "Tzolis tops gyokeres as the worst signing we’ve made with arteta and that says alot cus £34m isn’t a lot."
Another supporter made a very early call: "Tzolis is arguably our worst winger signing since Willian and somehow he’s starting over Eze because he “runs” more. I’m actually tired of this nonsense."
Another compared him to Martinelli who left for Al-Hilal: "Tzolis is 1000times worse than nelli oml."
One gave a grim verdict: "Tzolis is garbage man."
Another added: "Tzolis is our worst winger since Willian."
Tzolis wasn't expected to take up a lead role in this Arsenal team but to offer Arteta more options out wide especially under the assumption of an elite left-winger arriving. But the club's failure to sign one gave him the chance to make the position his own before the January transfer window.
