Craven League considers rule changes to boost competition

The league's executive committee has proposed that clubs with multiple teams can play in the same division after the 2027 season, provided certain conditions are met.

These conditions are aimed at preventing any manipulation of results, with teams required to play each other on the first day of the league season and the first day of the second half of the league season.

Priority in team selection should be given to the first XI over the second and third XIs.

The second XI should also be prioritised over the third XI.

There is some flexibility in squad selection, with the potential for personnel changes via the demotion rule and early-season swapping.

The league said that the rule change could mean that "The advantage if this rule is passed is that the best teams will be playing in the correct divisions, thus strengthening quality and competition within the league."

Another change being considered is increasing the radius of eligibility for clubs wishing to join the league from 12 miles to 15 miles from the mid-point at Sutton Cricket Club.

This change is being proposed in a bid to attract more clubs to the league, which has seen 11 clubs leave in the past decade.

The league has seen a number of changes in club participation, with some clubs moving their first and second XIs to other leagues while leaving their lower teams in the Craven League.

The league is also looking at changes to rules regarding demotions during a season, as the current rules are seen as disadvantageous to clubs with teams in other leagues.

A proposed rule change also aims to ensure the timely return of league and individual trophies in good condition.

The proposal states: "Clubs that return trophies late will be fined £50 and this will be increased by £10 for every additional week they are not returned by.

"The trophies should be returned in good condition.

"Cup trophies should be returned by May 31 each year, league and individual trophies by August 31 each year."

A unique rule to the Craven League, which requires umpires to change ends after the tea interval, is also under review.

The executive committee has proposed that "umpires may change ends between innings if they wish."

The Craven & District Umpires' Association has also proposed a rule change, suggesting that five penalty runs be awarded to the batting side (if they are deemed to be at fault) if the 45th over is not started within three hours of wickets being pitched.

Additional overs that are not started on time would also result in five penalty runs being awarded to the batting side.

The clubs have also proposed several rule changes, including variations on starting times and match durations.

The current rule is for 1.30pm starts from April to August and 12.30pm in September.

Alternative proposals include starting all matches at 1.30pm, 1pm from April to August and 12.30pm in September, or 1pm from April to August and noon in September.

There is also a proposal to reduce all matches to 40 overs per side, rather than the current 45 in divisions one to three and 40 in division four.

Another proposal is that scorers be paid £20 per match by the opposition if they have no scorer, up from £15.
