As we enter November, college football's coach-firing season is heating up. On Sunday, Florida State fired head coach Mike Norvell, and now one of the sport's premier programs is searching for a coach.
On3's Pete Nakos dropped a list of names to watch, and LSU football defensive coordinator Blake Baker was included.
Here's what Nakos wrote:
"The Tigers’ defensive coordinator turned down the Tulane job this past offseason to stay in Baton Rouge on Lane Kiffin’s new staff. Viewed as one of the top defensive coordinators in college football, he’s emerged as a head coaching candidate after turning around the LSU defense. Under Baker, the Tigers ranked 15th in scoring defense and 25th nationally in total defense in 2025. A former Tulane linebacker, he has also held coordinator roles at Louisiana Tech, Miami and Missouri."
LSU fans should get used to hearing Baker's name this coaching cycle. The LSU DC has been one of the sport's top defensive play-callers, dating back to his time at Missouri. He's proven himself as a recruiter and an X's-and-O's coach.
Baker turned down the Tulane job, but Florida State is a major Power Four program. If FSU comes calling, LSU probably isn't winning that battle.
Baker is among the highest paid assistants in the FBS and it would likely take a major job to pull him away from Baton Rouge.
