Stephen A. Smith seems to have heard enough from Michael Irvin about the Dallas Cowboys. During a “First Take” debate with the former Cowboys receiver on Monday morning over whether Dallas has to beat the Philadelphia Eagles that night, the ESPN analyst took aim at Irvin and told viewers, “Get all over him from here to Brazil.”
The Cowboys and Eagles both take 2-4 records into the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field, and the state of the NFC East sits at the center of Smith’s case.
Smith didn’t mince words with the “First Take” audience: “I wanna let everybody know how pathetic Michael Irvin is. He is absolutely positively pathetic.”
Nor did he want it to end when the segment did. “If you see Michael Irvin online somewhere, troll him, troll him to the end. This is pathetic.”
For all the jabs, Smith carved out a caveat: “Now I don’t disagree with him, but the nerve of him to say, ‘I’m fully aware that the Dallas Cowboys are 3-8 in their last 11 games dating back to December. I’m fully aware that in prime-time games since the start of 2025, they’re like 1-7-1, which is an NFL worst. I’m pretty aware that they are winless in prime-time games this year.’ All of those things are true, okay?”
Dallas has lost all three of its prime-time games this season. That includes a 24-16 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night, October 8, and a 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on October 18, leaving the Cowboys on a two-game skid.
The division was the bigger sticking point. “How in the hell are you gonna say that with the Dallas Cowboys being in the NFC East, the weakest conference in football right now? This dude is saying this, that this is the end if they can’t win this game,” Smith argued.
No team in the NFC East has more than four wins. The New York Giants lead the division at 4-2-1, with Philadelphia second and Dallas third at 2-4, while Washington sits fourth at 1-4-1.
Smith took issue with the timing as well, saying Irvin, “seven games in, is already to write their epitaph if they don’t end up winning this game.”
Monday’s game is only the third of Dallas’ six division games. The Cowboys, who rank last on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric, split the first two, losing 28-20 at the Giants in the season opener and then beating Washington 37-20 a week later.
Smith signed off with his own version of Irvin’s take and one last jab: “This brother is saying, ‘It’s do-or-die here at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia,’ where I’m at right now. You are pathetic and I love it.”
Irvin had his own message for Philadelphia on Monday morning, which he delivered to a room full of Eagles fans on “Good Morning Football”: “And we know how to win Super Bowls, and we will get back starting tonight at the cost of the Eagles fans.”
He speaks from experience on that front. Irvin spent his entire playing career with the Cowboys, from 1988 to 1999, earning five Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors in 1991 while helping the franchise win three Super Bowls in four seasons. Dallas hasn’t been back to the big game since the last of those titles, after the 1995 season.
However, after Monday night, Dallas will still have 10 games remaining, beginning with a Nov. 1 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Eagles visit Washington that same day and host the Giants on November 8. The Cowboys and Eagles meet again on November 26 at AT&T Stadium.
