Arsenal set to battle Manchester United in the race for Premier League midfielder

Arsenal’s search for attacking depth appears to be taking them back to Bournemouth, with Marcus Tavernier emerging as a serious name under consideration alongside other closely monitored Cherries talents.

According to TeamTalk, Tavernier is “generating significant Premier League interest” after what has been described as a “hugely impressive start to the season”. Arsenal and Manchester United are both following the 27-year-old, while Newcastle United retain a long-standing interest and Tottenham Hotspur had also looked at him previously.

Marcus Tavernier fits Arsenal transfer brief

The key detail in this development is Arsenal’s continuing work on the left side of their attack. The report states that “Arsenal have been compiling reports on Tavernier as they assess options to strengthen their left-sided attack” and adds that “The Gunners remain in the market for a new left winger”.

Tavernier’s appeal is obvious. He has “scored six goals in 14 appearances this season”, has operated mainly from the left, and offers positional flexibility that recruitment departments value highly. TeamTalk notes that “His ability to play in several positions could make him an attractive option for Mikel Arteta as Arsenal consider how to add depth and quality to their attacking ranks.”

That versatility stands out. Tavernier can work across the front line, drop into midfield and cover at wing-back if needed. For clubs competing across multiple fronts, that profile carries real weight. Players who can solve several squad issues at once often move quickly from background checks to genuine shortlist status.

Bournemouth stars on Arsenal radar

This is not an isolated check on one player. Arsenal’s focus on Bournemouth appears broader and more deliberate. The report says, “Arsenal are huge admirers of teenage forward Eli Junior Kroupi, who has also caught their attention, while they have been watching midfielder Alex Scott closely.”

That gives this story a wider context. Arsenal are not simply reacting to a brief purple patch. They are studying a cluster of Bournemouth players and, by extension, the work being done at the Vitality Stadium under Marco Rose. Tavernier becoming “another player who has impressed Arsenal’s recruitment team” suggests a sustained process rather than a passing glance.

When several names from one club are under active observation, it usually points to deep scouting work and multiple layers of internal assessment. Arsenal seem to be building a detailed picture of Bournemouth’s squad, weighing immediate value against longer-term upside.

Manchester United competition could grow

Manchester United’s involvement adds another layer to the situation. TeamTalk reports that the club “have also been watching the Bournemouth star, with the club’s recruitment department assessing his situation as part of their wider transfer planning.”

There is uncertainty around Old Trafford priorities, particularly as “their priorities could change depending on who is appointed as the club’s next head coach if Michael Carrick is sacked.” Even so, the piece claims “Jason Wilcox has tasked the recruitment department with continuing its work on potential targets, with Tavernier among the players being assessed.”

For Arsenal, that means any move for Tavernier may not stay straightforward for long. His output, flexibility and Premier League experience make him the sort of player whose market can gather pace quickly.

Our View

Tavernier is an intriguing one because he feels like the type of signing that could make more sense the longer you think about it. Six goals in 14 appearances is strong production, but it is the line about versatility that really jumps out. If one player can cover the left wing, central areas and even wing-back, there is clear squad value there.

There is still a question over ceiling. Arsenal need players who can shift major matches, not only fill gaps. That is why this report is interesting rather than totally convincing. Tavernier looks like a smart option, but perhaps more as part of a wider attacking refresh than as the headline arrival.

The Bournemouth angle is fascinating too. When Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott are mentioned in the same breath, it suggests Arsenal’s recruitment team see that squad as a serious talent source. That can be a very encouraging sign because it points to planning, not panic.

If this ends with Tavernier joining, the hope would be that he raises the floor of the squad immediately and gives the manager trusted cover across multiple roles. If it does not happen, this still reads like useful evidence that the club are targeting players with proven league output and tactical flexibility. That feels like a sensible direction of travel.
